Smith Looking For More Bulli Success

By Peter Davis
For the past month, David Smith has been punter’s ‘go to’ trainer with his talented team winning 14 times, with 10 saluting at Bulli.

On Wednesday at Bulli, Smith has five engaged - four carrying his Ethics suffix, in addition to speedy juvenile Tarawi Ted.

On the nine-event card, Smith's night kicks off with the promising Rodeo Ethics in Race 1.

The son of Barcia Bale thwarted a mid-race challenge from King Power to score by a clear 3 ½ lengths at Bulli on August 14. His 26.30s effort was the equal best of the night and only .14, or two lengths shy of his personal best which was registered on July 21 when an all-the-way winner from box three. With pace to his inside, Rodeo Ethics is drawn to get all the breaks from the outside alley.

In Race 2, Wacky Ethics steps to 515m for the first time. He’s been out of the winner’s list since June 22 but is well drawn wide (box seven) and strikes suitable company.

Tarawi Ted (pictured above) made his Bulli debut on August 14 when a closing second to Wicked Bella in 22.64s over 400m. As a 30.05s winner at Wentworth Park, Tarawi Ted has moderate beginners positioned on each side and his box manners have been very reliable.

Next up is Outlaw Ethics – a litter brother to Tarawi Ted – in Race 5. At start five, he posted a smart 26.22s maiden win at Bulli and followed with a 26.39s win at the Slacky Flat circuit on August 14. From box five, there’s no room for error yet, like Tarawi Ted, he’s a very good beginner and headed for higher honours.

Smith’s final runner is veteran Loyal Ethics. He’s not managed a win since December and looks the least likely of the Smith quintet to prevail.

The meeting is the first in GRNSW’s short-term prizemoney equalisation process, with all winners over 472m and 515m receiving $2600 – a rise of $1000 on previous metrics.

The first race at Bulli is slated for 7.05pm.
