Repeat Performance Expected For Cawbourne Apollo

By Jeff Collerson
Cawbourne Apollo caused a boilover when he led throughout to trounce a strong fifth grade field at Wentworth Park on February 28 and should only need to begin cleanly to down a lesser lineup there on Saturday night.

Cawbourne Apollo wasn't headed when he easily beat Canya Love Me and Midnight Spritz - who between them had won 11 of their 27 races - in a flying 29.67.

Trainer Bailey Dickinson said: "I always knew this dog could run but at his first few Wenty races he just couldn't handle the track.

"What did surprise me last week was Cawbourne Apollo's first split of 5.41, I didn't think he could go that quick early.

"Saturday's race certainly looks no harder and probably easier if anything so if Cawbourne Apollo gets the start right again he should be hard to beat.''

Hooked On Fame, trained by 83-year-old Fred Shoobert, is tipped to extend his love affair with Wentworth Park by winning Saturday night's Ladbrokes Racing Club Stakes, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

Hooked On Fame clocked his personal best Wentworth Park time of 29.72 when he led throughout in a 520m fifth grade last Saturday night, taking his tally at headquarters to two wins and a second from five starts.

He has box four on Saturday but not surprisingly trainer Fred Shoobert is not concerned about the draw.

"Hooked On Fame has a terrific record from box four, he has won six of his eight races from that draw,'' Shoobert said,

"I bought Hooked On Fame for a bit over $4000 when he was 10 weeks old because I was keen on the progeny of Hooked On Scotch and when I heard there was a litter in Queensland by him which had been produced by a strong winning bitch I grabbed him.

"I got my first dog when I was 23 so I've been in the game for 50 years and love it.

"What excited me most about Hooked On Fame's win last week was his first split of 5.36, that is really going quick.''

Trainer Sergio Forner concedes he was disappointed with Forners Storm's fourth at Wentworth Park last Saturday but is hoping the experience on the track will enable the bitch to win on Saturday night.

The wide-running Forners Storm looks ideally positioned in box eight in Saturday's Sky Racing Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Prior to last week's fourth placing Forners Storm had been impressive winning twice over 520m at Dapto in best-of-the-night times of 29.85 and 29.73.

Last week Forners Storm showed good early pace but ran very wide on the first turn and after being third to the back straight faded to fourth.

"Before last week I had given Forners Storm a post-to-post slip at Wentworth Park so I didn't expect her to lose the first turn like she did,'' Forner said.

"All I can put it down to is the turn loomed up too quickly for her and she wasn't expecting it.

"She handles the first bend at Dapto so I'm hoping that she will learn from last week and if she comes out a bit better she should go well.''

Forners Storm.

Zipping Conway will be having his first 520m start in almost two years when he exits box one in Saturday night's Masters Stakes at Wentworth Park.

A litter brother to Zipping Kansas, Zipping Conway was rated superior by their former trainer Jason Magri early in their careers.

But a succession of setbacks has resulted in Zipping Conway, who turns five in August, having a mere 26 races for 12 wins and nine placings.

Owner-trainer Marty Hallinan said: "From box one Zipping Conway should have the speed to be in front at the first turn on Saturday but because his past few races have been over 401m at Richmond he is likely to get tired in the run home.''
