Davidson Looking For A Successful Quick Back Up

By Jeff Collerson
Lektra Lad produced his best performance in six weeks when second at Wentworth Park last Saturday night and trainer Mark Davidson believes "backing up" on Wednesday will suit his group 3 Bob Payne Sprint winner.

Lektra Lad has box one in the winningedgeinvestments.com Stakes, a 520m fifth grade at headquarters, but lacks experience from inside draws.

The dog drew seven when he led throughout to win the Bob Payne on May 7 in a personal best 29.76 but his nine starts from boxes one, two and three have resulted in just two wins.

"I think he will handle the rails okay, he just has to come out cleanly,'' trainer Mark Davidson said.

"Lektra Lad is a highly strung dog who tends to go up and down in the boxes before the lids go up.

"It seems the more he races the better he settles down which is why I decided to back him up so soon after Saturday night's race.''

Lektra Lad's sole danger looks to be Zipping Lyris, who has won three from six Wentworth Park appearances and has drawn well in box two.

Minnie Finn, whose husband John trains Zipping Lyris said: "We were disappointed when she finished down the course from box two at her last start at Wentworth Park on July 16.

"Early in her career Zipping Lyris looked like being a top notcher but if she doesn't lead and gets shuffled back soon after the start she does not go as good.''

Kip Keeping, a relatively recent addition to the Finn kennels, looks hard to beat in the Ladbrokes Mates Mode Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Minnie Finn said: "Kip Keeping is not terribly strong at the finish of 520m but he can show a bit of pace and is perfectly drawn in box one.''

Boom stayer Tiger Jack's litter brother and kennelmate Silver Luck makes his 720m debut in Wednesday night's mixed grade Thanks Maria Stakes but trainer Jodie Lord is confident the dog will "get" the distance.

"There is no reason Silver Luck won't run the 720m because he has always looked as if will stay and his litter brother Tiger Jack is so strong at the finish,'' Lord said.

"I give Silver Luck a great chance of going straight to the lead and if he does that he should be hard to run down.''

Interesting runner is Miss Free Reign, formerly trained by Judith Richardson but now with Nowra trainer Jason Fletcher.

Miss Free Reign has won only once in 19 starts over shorter distances but Richardson's husband John has always believed the greyhound could become a stayer.

RETIREMENT may be just around the corner for Coast Model, who is chasing her 15th Wentworth Park win in Wednesday night's Ladbrokes Same Race Multi Free-For-All over 520m.

Coast Model was runner-up to kennelmate She's A Pearl in the Million Dollar Chase final at Wentworth Park on May 7 and came from box three to win in a slick 29.83 at Wentworth Park on July 6.

"She has won half a dozen races from wide draws but is better positioned near the rails so box two on Wednesday should suit her,'' trainer Jodie Lord said.

"Coast Model is very honest and should make a terrific brood bitch so come spring time I think she might be retired to stud.''

Lord is wary of the Frank Hurst-trained Good Odds Emma, who has box four against Coast Model.

Good Odds Emma has won seven of her 14 Wentworth Park outings and Lord said: "I think whoever leads around the first turn will win.''
