Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase

She's One Of The Best Ever

By Jeff Collerson
When She's A Pearl notched her 12th straight win in race record time in Saturday night's TAB Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park she became the first greyhound to win Wentworth Park's big two group ones, the Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg and the MDC - and in doing so proved herself the equal, if not superior, to the mighty Fernando Bale.

Fernando Bale ran a race record 29.48 winning the 2015 Golden Easter Egg and won his races with explosive speed out of the boxes, just like JODIE and Andy Lord's superstar.

She's A Pearl posted dazzling splits of 5.30, 13.55 and 17.58 in her all-the-way win on Saturday night, Chased throughout by another from the all-conquering Lord kennels in Coast Model, who was beaten five-and-a-half lengths.

Dapto Megastar winner Ritza Donna was just over two lengths away third, with She's A Pearl's win on Saturday lifting her earnings to $1,353,010.

She's A Pearl's consistency is remarkable because when she won her semi-final of the Million Dollar Chase her sectional times were 5.30, 13.51 and 17.55 with her overall figures of 29.30.

Yet despite She's A Pearl gob-smacking consistency, punters shied away from her to some extent on Saturday night.

Bookmaker Mark Merlino said: "I was flat out writing her name.

"She blew in the betting from $1.35 to $1.75 with her kennelmate Coast Model being best backed, firming from $6.50 to $4.40.''

Saturday's second richest race, the $100,000 to the winner Masters Meteor, was taken out by the Nathan Goodwin-trained Angry Blizzard, who edged out Crazy Old Goat by a half head in 29.96.

Those figures were well outside the race record set by inaugural winner Cosmic Bonus who clocked 29.63 in 2018.

Angry Blizzard's determined win gave mid north coast trainer Nathan Goodwin his biggest success, but he revealed after the race the dog had almost missed the series.

"Going into the heats on April 27 I had only been able to give him one gallop up my straight in three weeks and I told his owner CHRIS Witt I might have to scratch the dog,'' Goodwin said.

"But he took his place in the field and after he finished second to Ritza Donald to get into the final, I put him up my straight again and I told my partner Leeanne Walker that Angry Blizzard had never come up so impressively.

"CHRIS Witt bred Angry Blizzard and since I began rearing the dog the only time he has left my property was when he was broken in.

"CHRIS was at Wentworth Park tonight and that is the first time he has seen him race live, so he picked the right night to watch him.''

Bargain buy Lektra Lad gave Hunter Valley trainer Mark Davidson his first group race success when he led throughout in the group 3 Bob Payne Sprint final.

"Lektra Lad's owner Craig Jones bought him as a performed maiden for just $1000 at the beginning of this year and when he asked me to take the dog I told him I needed to watch his replays first,'' Davidson said.

"When he phoned to ask if I had watched them I said I was considering giving the dog a go and he said that's good because he is on his way to your kennels right now.

"Lektra Lad won his first five starts for me at Bulli, Maitland and The Gardens, but unfortunately his owner could not get to Wenty to see him win tonight.

"He intended to come but his mum had a fall and Craig had to go to Dubbo Hospital to look after her so missed Wenty.''

Second fastest time of the night was posted by dual Million Dollar Chase winning trainer Peter Lagogiane's bitch French Martini, who led throughout from box five to win the group 3 Ladies Bracelet in a flying 29.46.
