Jump And Big Boy Will Be Faster

By Jeff Collerson
Mellcat Big Boy has clocked a sizzling 29.74 in each of his Wentworth Park wins on the past two Saturday nights but trainer John Mellon believes the dog is capable of going faster this week - providing he begins smartly in the Congratulations Ebby Jet Power Stakes.

Mellcat Big Boy has box eight in the fourth and fifth grade 520m event, rising in class only slightly on his fast May 21 and 28 Wenty wins.

"Although his times were identical, I thought Mellcat Big Boy went better last week than he did on May 21,'' Mellon said.

"If he can step away smartly he is capable of improving a bit.

"Last week he didn't fly out of the boxes and was on the backside of a couple of his rivals when he hit the ground.

"But he got to the front quickly because he mustered speed so rapidly.''

Mellcat Big Boy has won four of his seven appearances from boxes seven and eight and Mellon is happy with the dog's extreme outside draw, despite slightly preferring box seven.

Royal Emgrand, a winner of 11 races over 520m at Wentworth Park, makes his Masters’ debut in Saturday night's 520m Congratulations Sunburnt Highway Stakes for veterans.

Royal Emgrand has not raced for three months but trainer Luke Azzopardi is pleased with the dog's current trial form.

"He broke 30sec clocking 29.93 in a stewards’ trial over 520m at Richmond on May 22 and last week recorded 30.06 in another 520m hit-out there,'' Azzopardi said.

"While he has not won in five races from box one Royal Emgrand has won five from 13 out of box two and I prefer him drawn near the rails.''

Royal Emgrand is partial to Wentworth Park and all but three of his 14 wins have been at Wenty.

With slow beginning wide runner Tradie's Mate in box two and box three empty, Royal Emgrand should only need to come out cleanly to be prominent at the first turn.

War Weapon looks to have a great draw in Saturday's Congratulations Liz Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, but trainer Neville Brown does not believe his dog can beat Simply Limelight, who has box eight.

Simply Limelight has been defeated in his three starts from boxes seven and eight but Brown said: "I have a big opinion of that dog and think his class will prevail.

"I expect him to be much too good for this field but concede War Weapon looks to have an excellent draw in box two.

"He hasn't raced since finishing fourth to Zipping Maserati at Wentworth Park on May 7 because he had a little problem.

"I gave War Weapon a couple of weeks off to get over it and I gave him a post-to-post slip at WP last week.

"He went okay but didn't set the world on fire.''

Saturday's best bet should be Black Fox, who has box one in the Congratulations Supreme Star Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Black Fox relishes an inside draw and last week at Wentworth Park led all the way from box three, recording his personal best time of 29.91 after reeling off a blistering initial split of 5.34.

Good value on Saturday is Diamond Ability, who has finally drawn near the rails at Wentworth Park in the Ladbrokes Switch Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Diamond Ability has been runner-up in each of her two Wenty outings, from boxes eight and seven, and was desperately unlucky from her wide draw when chasing home My Mate Kate last week.
