Wednesday To Be The Day For Not Today

By Jeff Collerson
Not Today has not raced since her fast finishing second to Gulgong Flyer at Wentworth Park on November 27 but has been freshened up and kept in trim for Wednesday night's first heat of the 520m fifth grade bitches' series with regular swimming in Narrabeen Lakes.

"She has had 20 or 30 minutes swimming every two days, she loves it,'' trainer Simon Ma said.

"I've heard other trainers say that greyhounds aren't in swimming races but I'm a firm believer in it because the dogs not only enjoy it, but it gives them a pleasant change of routine and is beneficial for any soreness they might have.

"Not Today (pictured) has box four on Wednesday but having an empty box on her left is a big help because she does not have a lot of early speed.

"And having just five rivals is also a big plus for a bitch like Not Today because it gives her a better chance of getting a clear run.

"Peter Lagogiane's greyhound Muffler will be hard to beat if she goes to the front and gets on the lure but if she doesn't do that Not Today has a very good chance.''

Crack jockey Brenton Avdulla's greyhound Fernando Hunter will be on trial for a start in the Beast Unleashed Gosford Gold Cup when he contests Wednesday night's 520m Summer Is For Racing Free-For-All at Wentworth Park.

Fernando Hunter clocked a slick 29.90 in finishing second at his Wentworth Park debut in April and resumed from a spell with an impressive win in a blistering 22.08 over 400m at Maitland on November 15.

Trainer Darryl Thomas said: "I am setting Fernando Hunter for the Gosford Cup heats on December 28 but plan to give him a couple of starts at Wenty to prepare him for that series.

"He is going well but is in a pretty tough race on Wednesday.''

Royal Emgrand, who has won 11 races over 520m at Wentworth Park, looks hardest to beat and is well positioned in box two.

Royal Emgrand has won five of his dozen starts from that draw.

Fernando Hunter's undefeated kennelmate Connections makes his first Wentworth Park appearance in Wednesday's second heat of the 520m fifth grade series for dogs.

Connections won his first seven races between November 27 last year and May 8, 2021 but has not raced since.

"He has been sidelined after cracking a bone in his wrist,'' Thomas said.

"But he is back and going extra well although he could be short of a run as he has not been over 500m plus since winning in the best time of the meeting over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS on May 8.''

Connections is a litter brother to Hardaway Ranger, who has won 22 of 41 races for trainer Ron Marsden.

Trainer Harry Sarkis bought Sugar Violet on behalf of Victorian owner Linda Edgerton after watcing the greyhound win from box eight at Gosford in August so is happy she will wear the pink rug in Wednesday's Hidez Australia Stakes, a 520m third and fourth grade.

Sugar Violet was a worthy runner-up from inside boxes at WP on November 20 and again last Wednesday but Sarkis considers her well drawn this week.

"Box eight will suit her because she uses a bit of the track and for some reason seems to show more early speed from wide draws,'' Sarkis said.

Diamantina Rose, who has had 10 wins and 33 placings at Wentworth Park, looks well placed in Wednesday's fourth bitches' fifth grade heat and should make full use of her box seven draw.

The Christine Proctor-trained Diamantina Rose has been placed in tougher class at her past three Wentworth Park outings and of her five rivals, only Appetizing, with a single win, has been successful at headquarters.
