Wide Draw Perfect For Connections

By Jeff Collerson
Connections had box one when he posted a sizzling 29.68 in his all-the-way win at Wentworth Park on Boxing Night but trainer Darryl Thomas believes the dog can continue his remarkable streak despite drawing box eight on Wednesday night.

Connections, who has had nine wins and a third from 10 starts, will wear the pink vest in the Sponsor A Race In 2022 Stakes, a 520m fourth grade.

After Connections' Boxing Night win, Thomas said: "I was worried when he drew box one because he steps to the right at the start and gets up the track slightly on the first turn.

"I actually like him better when he is drawn anywhere from box five out to eight.''

There is abundant early pace in Connections' race on Wednesday but statistics seem to justify Thomas' belief, as his dog is undefeated in five races from boxes five, seven and eight.

Jodie Lord trained 141 winners and notched 197 placings in 2021 and started this year off with a bang on Saturday night, landing a double with Coast Model and Cawbourne Turvey.

But it could be husband Andy's turn in the spotlight on Wednesday as he has bright prospects of a double with two lesser known members of their team.

Andy Lord has Tiger Jack in box one in the GBOTA Welcome Maiden over 520m and Cayenne Model in box eight in the Cash Connect ATM Plus Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Tiger Jack looks ideally drawn and should be suited over 520m after rattling home along the rails to finish second on debut over 350m at Goulburn on December 24 and when runner-up over 440m there on December 31.

Cayenne Model finished fourth at her only Wentworth Park outing on October 6 but that run was good, as she was having her first start but ran off the track and collided on the first bend.

She came from a wide draw, box six, when she clocked a brilliant 24.61, fastest time of the day in leading throughout over 440m at Goulburn on December 24.

Cayenne Model should relish exiting the extreme outside trap on Wednesday night.

Smooth Jack, trained by Michelle Frankland-Shambler for media personality "Disco" Dave Carlson, could notch her second Wentworth Park win on Wednesday.

Smooth Jack has box four in race eight, a 520m fifth grade, and is partial to Wentworth Park where she has had a win and six placings from 13 starts.

"When she finished sixth at her last start there on December 22 she was up near the lead early but got taken out and lost all chance,'' Shambler said.

"After the race she had scratches all down her leg and I have had to wait for those to heal.

"But she is ready to go again and I like her draw on Wednesday because she has a vacant box on her left and has only five rivals, so should be suited by such a small field.''

Lektra Terrace finished fifth at his Wentworth Park debut on December 29 but can go a lot better from box one in Wednesday's Ladbrokes Switch Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

"He musters speed after a step or two and while he is not strong at the finish of 520m, Lektra Terrace likes to get a break on his opponents by going fast in the middle stages,'' trainer Anthony Dawson said.

"At his last run he went fast up to the pacemaker on the back straight but ran into the back of the leader and that incident finished him.

"That was Lektra Terrace's first time out of the boxes but he had previously clocked nice time in a post-to-post trial there.''
