Billy Hoping Bromell Will Impress

By Jeff Collerson
Trainer Billy McGovern is banking on Impress Bromell improving his box manners as his promising youngster bids to score his first Wentworth Park win tonight.

Impress Bromell has box seven in the Vale Robert Absalom Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, after finishing an unlucky fourth from box eight at his Wenty debut on December 29.

Prior to his first Wentworth Park appearance Impress Bromell had raced five times on provincial tracks for two wins and two thirds, posting brilliant 520m winning times at Nowra of 29.63 and 29.52.

"He is a fast dog but his box manners need to get better,'' McGovern said.

"At his first Wentworth Park race he was just slotting into second place in the early stages when he got checked.

"Since then I have given him a trial at Temora and he went extra well so he is ready to go.''

Impress Bromell's kennelmate He's All Gone makes his Wentworth Park debut in tonight's Summer Racing Carnival Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and goes into the race with an imposing provincial record of four wins and two seconds from seven starts.

"He's All Gone has box eight and I reckon he is ideally positioned out there,'' McGovern said.

"After his last start win over 520m at Nowra he cut his leg so he has not raced since late November.

"But he recently had a box-to-box trial at Wenty and while he went just okay in that hit-out, the run will improve him a lot.''

Sweptail (pictured) not only surprised racegoers but even his trainer Frances Goodwin when he clocked a fast 29.89 in his all-the-way win at Wentworth Park last Wednesday night.

Sweptail has box three in tonight's Best Wishes Sue Stakes, a 520m fifth grade, and Goodwin is happy seeing him drawn close to the rails again.

"He was having only his second start for me last week and while I was confident he could run around 30.10, I was surprised when he got well under the 30sec mark,'' Goodwin said.

"Sweptail needs an inside draw so is well boxed again this week but his kennelmate Blackjackist, who also needs an inside alley, has come up with box six in the Cash Connect ATM Plus Stakes.

"Blackjackist has plenty of ability but I haven't got him quite right just yet.''

Jack Smith, who trained champion sprinter Feral Franky, has two of that crowd favourite's early offspring making their first Wentworth Park appearances tonight.

They are the unraced Irinka Jock, who has box six in the 520m GBOTA Welcome Maiden and Irinka Gladys, drawn in seven in the Ladbroke It! Maiden over the same trip.

"Irinka Jock has a bit of a motor and has trialled 30.15 at Wenty but he is very green and does not have a lot of early pace,'' Smith said.

"Irinka Gladys, who has been placed twice in shorter races at Dubbo and Bathurst, is capable of clocking 30.20 at Wenty.''
