Hunter To Head Back To Town

By Jeff Collerson
Fernando Hunter will head back to Wentworth Park following his stunning return to racing at Maitland on Monday.

Trained by Darryl Thomas for crack jockey Brenton Avdulla, Fernando Hunter was resuming from a spell but was sent out a $1.08 favourite before winning over 400m in a brilliant 22.08sec.

The win took the dog's record to seven wins and three placings from 11 starts, with a luckless second in April marking his only visit to WP.

"This dog has had lots of problems so it was a relief to see him win so well but more importantly, to have him pull up perfectly,'' Thomas said.

"Last campaign Fernando Hunter was usually a bit jaded after a race but he is completely sound now and if anything he is going better than ever.

"I won't waste time getting him to back to Wenty because I want to strike while the iron is hot.''

Vic Sultana retired last weekend after notching up a remarkable 35 years as the lure driver at Richmond.

Sultana, who is also an outstanding trainer, prepared Sky Wave to win 25 of 49 races and to finish third to Mystic Riot and Jamella Jet in the inaugural 2018 Million Dollar Chase at Wentworth Park.

As lure driver Vic Sultana followed in the footsteps of his brother Laurie, who had the all important role at Richmond during the 1970s and early 80s.

The Sultana family have been involved in various capacities in Sydney greyhound racing since the 1960s, with Vic the father of currently highly successful trainer Darren Sultana.

Vic Sultana's younger brother Sam is also one of Sydney's leading trainers, while daughters Michelle, who prepared the outstanding speedster Unison, and Kristy, trainer of the former champion sprinter Flying Ricciardo, are among the most successful at their craft.

Crowdza Dazzled had his first look at Wentworth Park on Saturday night with a 520m trial in preparation for his race debut there in a semi-final of the Ladbrokes Flight To The Phoenix this week.

Crowdza Dazzled, who earned a spot in the semis with a Temora heat win, went over 520m in 30.31sec.

"In his trial he went pretty steady but considering he had never previously been around two turns I was satisfied with his run,'' trainer Stuart Hazlett said.

"He got home in 12.09 which, while not fast, is satisfactory considering he had never been tried beyond 472m previously.

"And I had a hectic time getting him to Wenty.

"A bridge I needed to cross to get to the freeway from my house at Towrang, near Goulburn, was under water.

"I had to wait for 90 minutes for the water to subside before I could proceed to Sydney.

"It was a worrying night because I wasn't sure whether I would be able to get home but while it had been raining all night, the water was about six inches under the bridge when I got back.''

Crowdza Dazzled won five of 10 Victorian races before being purChased by Hazlett earlier this year and has notched four wins from six starts for the experienced Sydney trainer.
