Jungle Deuce Back In Town

By Jeff Collerson
Early in his career Jungle Deuce was considered an inside draw specialist but trainer Jack Smith is happy seeing his group 1 Topgun invitee in box seven in Saturday night's GBOTA Staff Appreciation Free-For-All.

Jungle Deuce's clash with Flight To The Phoenix semi-finalist Good Odds Cash and Bathurst Cup winner Zulu Warlord looms as the highlight of the 11-race card.

Smith's greyhound overcame a mediocre getaway and an early check to win over 525m at The Meadows last Saturday in 29.90, fastest time of the race meeting.

"Because he has not been beginning Jungle Deuce has more chance of making his own luck from an outside alley,'' Smith said.

"If he misses the jump from an inside box they come across on top of him but from out wide he can slot into a good position.

"He can really get going once he hits the ground.''

Jungle Deuce has been selected, along with Wow, Zipping Kyrgios and Bandit Ned, to represent NSW in the November 6 Topgun.

Another greyhound set to tackle a group race in Melbourne is Ladbrokes Peter Mosman Opal finalist Fernando's Glory, who has box eight in Saturday night's Cash Connect Plus Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

"I am taking her to Sandown for the group 2 Laurels, a bitches classic, along with Analysing and Chase Me Honey,'' trainer Michael Hardman said.

"Fernando's Glory has 'beaten the grader' on Saturday because this draw was out before she won her second WP race on Wednesday night.

"Sometimes Fernando's Glory messes about after she is boxed but on Wednesday, when I put her in, she crouched down ready to go so I knew then she was going to ping the lids.''

Fernando's Glory's toughest rival looks to be the consistent Zippy Fruit, who has box one.

But while Fernando's Glory has clocked 29.71 and 29.77 in her WP wins, Zippy Fruit's trainer Craig Chappelow does not expect his greyhound to go much quicker than her personal best Wenty time of 30.19.

"Her big attribute is her brilliant early pace but I doubt she has the strength at the end of 520m to go much better,'' Chappelow said.

"But through bowling along in front Zippy Fruits is able to make her own luck.''

Silver Heels, who has Chased home prolific Wenty top grade winners Sunburnt Highway and Good Odds Harada at his past two starts in town, gets his chance from box three in Saturday's M2 & M3 Masters Stakes.

Trainer Steve Fitch said: "Silver Heels dropped a back leg muscle in January so he can no longer run 29.92 like he did last year.

"But he clocked 30.22 finishing third to Good Odds Harada on October 16 so given a fast track should be capable of getting down to 30.10.

"I've been waiting for an M2 & M3 Masters for Silver Heels so he doesn't have to Chase Sunburnt Highway and Good Odds Harada around again.''

Saturday's best bet should be Country Cups specialist Casual Glance, who returns to WP from box seven in a modest 520m fifth grade, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Stakes, after finishing a gallant second behind Wow in last Sunday's Goulburn Cup Final..

Casual Glance looks a class above his rivals and has won four of six starts wearing the black rug.

Good value on Saturday should be One Way, who has box four in race two, a 520m fifth grade.

One Way was a certainty beaten when second at his WP debut last Saturday night.
