August Bob To Focus On Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
August Bob is unlikely to tackle the Group 2 Ladbrokes Bulli Gold Cup or Group 2 Ladbrokes Richmond Derby despite his thrilling 29.65 best time of the night win at Wentworth Park on Friday.

A finalist in the Group 1 Ladbrokes National Derby at Wentworth Park on January 20, August Bob broke through for his first city win in seven appearances when he led throughout to easily beat Sammy Ethan on Friday night.

After the race trainer Steve Fitch said: "It has taken August Bob a while to work Wentworth Park out but I wasn't surprised at his fast time tonight.

"In fact, I thought he was capable of even faster time.

"He will now contest the final of Friday's race at Wentworth Park on Saturday, February 10, and after that, I will stick to Wenty with him.

"August Bob has so much ability I don't think a race like the Golden Easter Egg is beyond him so until then I will work him through his grades at Wenty.''

August Bob clocked brilliant early splits of 5.37 and 13.80 on Friday and his overall time was just .01sec better than the 29.66 posted by First Lady, who led all the way to win a 520m fifth grade.

First Lady, a litter sister to unplaced National Derby favorite Good Odds Cobber, is trained by thoroughbred trainer Garry Frazer for restaurant proprietor Wayne Edwards.

Edwards, who owns a popular seafood eatery at Windsor, handled First Lady on Friday night and declared the Ladbrokes Richmond Oaks was his bitch's mission.

Heats of the Oaks will be run at Richmond on February 23 with the $50,000 to the winner final over 520m there on March 1.

First Lady posted slick early splits of 5.39 and 13.75 and covered the 520m in .09sec quicker than she had recorded in her previous Wentworth Park win on January 27.

"I bought her as a pup from her breeders Tracey and Frank Hurst,'' Edwards explained.

"I have a long background in greyhounds as my grandfather had them in the 40s and 50s.

"Richmond is First Lady's local track so the Oaks looks an ideal race for her.

"We may enter her for Richmond next Wednesday night as a lead-up to the Oaks heats.''

Fire Lighter's first Wentworth Park win on Friday night did not surprise Chris Perry, kennel foreman for the dog's central coast trainer Michael Ivers.

On Friday Fire Lighter raced very wide but led all the way to score by a half-length in a nippy 29.87.

"We've always known he is a quick dog because in trials Fire Lighter has twice broken the Gosford 388m record,'' Perry said.

"He hurt himself on the top turn when he finished third at WP on December 1 and tonight's race was his first since then.

"Leading all the way like he did tonight should do his confidence the world of good.''

Short course superstar Running Reds notched his 21st win at start number 35 when he took out Friday's top grade 280m event.

Running Reds gave trainer John Grief a winning trifecta, as the dog defeated his kennelmates Anjo Typhoon and his litter brother Light One Up.
