Vale - Paul Bigeni

By Jeff Collerson
Paul Bigeni, a successful greyhound trainer for the past four decades and among the most popular figures at Wentworth Park race meetings, passed away this week.

Bigeni, who was in his mid 80s, trained several Wentworth Park stars including Petro The Rock, In My Days and Ancient Secret.

Former editor of The Sportsman, Paul Micallef, a prominent harness racing indentity, was a friend of Bigeni and said: "My mother Mary and Paul's wife Carmen were not only cousins but were the closest of friends.

"Paul went to bed earlier this week and just didn't wake up.''

Ancient Secret, who had 100 starts for 10 wins and 39 placings, had six wins and 34 placings at Wentworth Park and was the popular Girraween trainer's most recent city class performer, scoring at headquarters as recently as November, 2019.

Bigeni also enjoyed great success with In My Days, who won 10 races, including four at Wentworth Park, but always insisted his best dog was Petro The Rock, who had 32 races for 10 wins and seven placings in 2004 and 2005.

Paul Bigeni is survived by his wife Carmen, their children Felix, Jimmy and Virginia, and their families.

GRNSW wishes to extend its sincere condolences to the Bigeni family at this sad time._
