Megastar Looks To The Futurity

By Jeff Collerson
Ritza Donna, who broke Flying Ricciardo's race record in taking out last Thursday night's group 1 Dapto Megastar, will be back at Wentworth Park for heats of another group 1, the National Futurity on Friday, January 14.

Flying Ricciardo set the Megastar race record in 2020 when he covered the 520m in 29.48, but Ritza Donna trimmed those figures to 29.43 when she won this year's final.

Ritza Donna turned two last month so will be among the oldest greyhounds eligible for the Futurity, for bitches whelped on or after October 1, 2019.

"That looks perfect for her so that is her obvious goal,'' trainer Mark Gatt said.

Ritza Donna has won just two races at WP but clocked a slick 29.85 beating Vamos Penny on November 13 and seems to be improving with every race.

And the "Ritza" tag? Ritza Donna's owner Frank Gatt, Mark Gatt's father, explained: "As a kid in Malta I had spiky hair and in Maltese ritza is the name given to spiky-looking sea urchins.

"So I was given the nickname Ritza and we have used it as a prefix for dozens of our greyhounds' names over the years.''

Mac Ibrox was sent out a raging hot $1.60 favourite but gave his supporters a few scares before struggling to a half head win in a slow 30.55 at his WP debut on Saturday night.

Mac Ibrox had created a big impression with Gosford wins over 400m in 22.06 and 515m in 29.54 so was all the rage when he drew box one in a "quiet'' 520m fifth grade.

After trailing Rocker Flyer to the back straight Mac Ibrox took over soon after but was not over impressive in his narrow win.

However trainer Billy Dance was happy with his dog's effort and remains upbeat about Mac Ibrox's future.

"He had not seen Wenty until tonight so can only get better,'' Dance said.

"Mac Ibrox is a lot better than what he showed tonight because while he can be a bit awkward in a field, he has a great attitude.

"When I take him to a track he lets me know he is there to race.

"My wife Cathy and I stopped breeding when the greyhound ban was declared and since then have bought a couple of greyhounds every year.

"We bought Mac Ibrox and his sister, Ibrox Wildfire, who has had two races for a second and a secenth but who has come in season, in a package deal for $5000 when they were puppies.

"My wife Cathy has always been a pretty good bargain hunter and she has secured us a very good deal again.''

Dance's duo are bred in the purple as they are by Ando's Mac from Mayfair Miss, whose dam Where's Demonica produced Melbourne trainer David Geall's group one winning stars Up Hill Jill and My Redeemer.

Bloss Sannette, whose Taree 537m record of 30.47 was set on September 25, 2010, and must be among the longest standing time standards on the books, has passed away aged 15.

Bloss Sannette won 18 of just 35 races and became a marvellous producer for renowned north coast owner-trainer-breeder Kevin Johnson, who is still breeding and training winners at 81.

"Unusually for a greyhound, Bloss Sannette would never come into the house, yet on the day she died the back door was open and she came inside looking for me,'' Johnson said.

"It was as if she knew she was on her last legs and wanted to say goodbye.

"She is now buried alongside another good bitch I raced called Rose Sannette, who had 55 races and earned prizemoney 50 times.''
