Finns and Zippings Set For Big Night At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Zipping Ontario was a certainty beaten when second from box seven in his heat but is set to make amends after coming up with box one in Saturday night's 720m Barbara's Gift Stakes final at Wentworth Park.

In his heat 10 days ago Zipping Ontario (pictured) began midfield but lost several lengths when trapped outside the wide running Winkler at the first turn and was pushed back to sixth spot with a lap to go.

He finished strongly once he found the rails but went down by four lengths to the promising Adam Campton-trained Ziggy Stardust, who was having his first 720m test.

"I would have been terribly disappointed if Zipping Ontario had drawn out wide again,'' said Melinda Finn, whose husband John trains the greyhound.

The dog's litter sister Zipping Virginia scored her second WP 720m win in as many appearances on Wednesday while another sister, Zipping Alabama, had won her heat of Saturday's race at her 720m debut, but John Finn rates Zipping Ontario as superior to his siblings.

Team Finn's box draw luck has held firm on Saturday as their superstar sprinter Zipping Kyrgios has also drawn box one, this time in the 520m WP heat of the Flight To The Phoenix series.

"When he started racing he liked being drawn wide but as he has got older Zipping Kyrgios definitely prefers an inside draw,'' Melinda Finn said.

Zipping Kyrgios has won four of his eight appearances wearing the red rug and goes into Saturday's heat boasting an impressive strike rate of 21 wins from 41 starts.

Another greyhound set to exit box one on Saturday and looking hard to defeat is the Kerry Drynan-trained Vamos Penny in the 520m WP Christmas December 18 Stakes.

Vamos Penny led early when sixth in a WP Free-For-All after drawing box seven on November 6 but drops sharply to fifth grade on Saturday.

Vamos Penny had no luck when third to Chevy Royale in a Flight To The Phoenix heat at Gosford on Tuesday, when she drew box six.

"Her Gosford run was terrific, I was very pleased with that effort,'' trainer Kerry Drynan said.

On Saturday Vamos Penny will be having her third race since a spell of more than five months and looks set to notch her ninth WP win.

Flashing Torque has been placed in three from seven WP starts but should only need to get even breaks to win Saturday night's Sponsor A Race With Us Stakes, a 520m fifth grade.

Last Saturday night at WP Flashing Torque clocked his fastest Wenty time when he recorded 29.99 in finishing second to Jason Magri's outstanding youngster Zipping Conway.

"Flashing Torque just isn't quite quick enough early,'' said trainer Robin Cooper.

"But he is going extra well at present and would have finished a lot closer last week if he had not been pushed wide by another dog at the first turn.

"I reckon he lost about three lengths when that happened and if he gets around the first bend safely on Saturday night he should be hard to beat.

"He has box seven and when he last drew this box he won over 520m at Nowra on October 18 by 14 lengths.''
