Not All Bad News For Predator At Maitland

By Jeff Collerson
A wide draw brought his exciting sprinter Speed Predator unstuck in Monday night's regional heat of the TAB Million Dollar Chase at Maitland but Finefeuiaki gave trainer James Porter plenty to smile about by recording his fourth win from his past six starts at the same meeting.

Speed Predator had defeated Million Dollar Chase regional finalist Aston Sapporo in a smart 25.03s at Maitland at his previous start but was badly hampered when showing pace and attempting to reach the rails from box seven in Monday's heat won by Cursed in 25.10.

"I gave Speed Predator no chance as soon as the draw came out,'' Greta-based Porter said.

"Since he injured his shoulder in a catching pen scrimmage Speed Predator can only handle one turn tracks like Maitland but he still desperately needs an inside draw.

"But Finefeuiaki looks about ready to head to Wentworth Park by the way he won on Monday.''

After beginning fairly from box one, Finefeuiaki drove along the rails to take a commanding early lead before stopping the 450m clock at 25.09s.

Those figures compared well with the sizzling 24.88s posted by Fire Legend in taking out heat one of the TAB Million Dollar Chase.

Finefeuiaki's win gave Porter, who combines greyhounds with training security guard dogs, and his partner Sharee, their 75th winner for the year.

The Greta trainer is set to have his most successful 12 months after notching 84 wins in 2018 and 81 successes last year.

"I am confident next year will be even better because we have several highly promising youngsters which have broken in exceptionally well at Dennis Barnes' Cudal Education Centre.

"Sharee and I have never had so many exciting young unraced greyhounds in our care.

"Finefeuiaki is named after my Tongan brother-in-law Sione Finefeuiaki, who played rugby league for the Storm, Sea Eagles and Knights, and now runs an academy helping under-privileged kids in his homeland.

"I bred the greyhound from Chunky But Funky, who won nine races for us and who has just been approved to produce a fourth litter.

"Chunky But Funky has been a good producer and Finefeuiaki does not turn two until next month so has it all ahead of him.

"His litter sister Lil Bit Longer is just as talented and she had won five of 17 races before getting flipped over and sustaining an injury at The Gardens on August 22.''
