Greyhound racing has lost a loyal friend with the death on Monday afternoon of George Cliff.

George, for many years an on-course photographer at Wentworth Park, finally succumbed to a long battle with lung disease.

Whenever greyhound racing came under fire, either through social media or in newspapers, George was invariably first to rally to the sport's defence.

His social media tweets and letters to the editor of the Daily Telegraph were frequent and always in support of greyhound racing.

A close friend of former television star Donnie Sutherland and former leading trainer Don McMillan, George's best greyhound in recent years was the Tom Halley-trained El Sutro.

She scored seven wins and 14 placings from 36 starts in 2012 and had a win and four placings from eight Wentworth Park starts.

George was aged 69.

His funeral will be held on Friday 25th September at 12.30pm in the Camelia chapel at Macquarie Park Cemetery, North Ryde.
