Prepare For A Paua Surge

By Jeff Collerson

Paua To Roar has won just one of ten Wentworth Park starts but as the winner of 18 races from 29 appearances on other tracks he looms as the best bet of Wednesday night's meeting.

Now trained by Anthony Azzopardi, Paua To Roar (pictured, yellow rug) has box six in race four (520m).

Paua To Roar handles outside and inside boxes equally as well and is in career best form, having posted fastest times of the meeting in winning his two most recent races at Geelong and Maitland.

And while his Wentworth Park winning strike rate is poor, the greyhound has done well at headquarters.

Apart from his sole win, his 10 starts there have yielded four seconds and a third.

Lorna Belle's last start third at Wentworth Park was a sensational effort but trainer Ron Bell is concerned his bitch is not suited by box one in race ten.

"I would prefer her drawn wide because earlier in her career she drew box one at Wenty one night and was most disappointing,'' Bell said yesterday.

"Formerly Lorna Belle showed good early speed but these days she tends to do her best work at the finish.

"But she is going well and should only need a clear run from the rails box to run a good race.''

Last Wednesday night at Wentworth Park Lorna Belle was skittled at the first turn but came from near the rear of the field on the back straight to beat all but Seven Jacks and To A Tee.

Here's Archie finished seventh at Bulli at his latest start but trainer Michael Clayton has advised punters to ignore that run when assessing form for Wednesday night's ninth race.

"On face value Here's Archie's run looked disappointing but as soon as the boxes opened another greyhound hit him in the mid-section," Clayton said.  "That took the wind right out of him.

"He is well drawn in box two because while he tends to miss the start from box one, he usually begins cleanly from boxes two and three.

"Here's Archie has to lead to win because he is a lot better dog when he is on the lure.''

Clayton is enjoying a great trot at present and also has Rock Sister in box seven in race 10 and Go Ginger Go (box four) in race seven.

"Rock Sister would have had a good chance had she drawn inside but Go Ginger Go, despite her poor draw, is going terrific," Clayton said.

"She has a strong show if she gets a clear run."

Magic Spring had four Wentworth Park wins in succession before his luckless sixth there last Wednesday night but should atone in race eight.

Last week Magic Spring, a brilliant box dog, jumped smartly but was badly checked immediately in a field which was crammed with front-runners.

"I don't mind him out in box seven because he runs straight to the first corner,'' trainer Noelene Holloway said.

"He tends to scratch his foot in the same place each start so last week I taped over it but maybe that didn't help him so I won't do it this week.

"I also give Queen Marina a chance in race five because while she led last week another greyhound gave her a bump on the back straight.

"If that had not happened she might have finished closer than six lengths behind the winner in third place.''
