Fantastic Battle Ahead In Puppy Classic

By Stuart Turner

Ladbrokes Magic Maiden winner Black Bear Lee and exciting newcomer Fantastic Spiral go head-to-head in the Group 3 Classicbet Nowra Summer Puppy Classic (520m).

The pair, who are among NSW’s standout newcomers, go in the second of five heats of the $25,000-to-the-winner race on Monday.

Black Bear Lee is one of the hottest properties in NSW greyhound racing, having captured the Magic Maiden in fantastic fashion.

A son of legendary sprinter Brett Lee, the Ruth Matic-trained greyhound won all three of his races in the $25,000-to-the-winner Group 3 series and sealed his triumph with a storming victory at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

Fantastic Spiral looks a great chance for this series, having proven his quality with some outstanding performances so far.

He has won eight of his 16 starts to date, including an impressive 26.44 run over the 472m at Bulli on April 1.

Jason Fletcher’s sprinter has a strong record from box three, from which he jumps from in the heat, and should be hard to beat.

Meanwhile, flying Lord Gee will jump from box six in the fifth heat.

Christine Proctor’s Charge is fresh from collecting the $25,000 top prize in last Saturday night’s Group 3 New Sensation final at Wentworth Park.

With eight wins from 17 starts he is already one of the most established contenders of the series and looks a strong chance to make it back-to-back Group triumphs.

Fantastic Sid (heat one) and Silent Witness, who faces Lord Gee in the fifth heat, are also ones to watch.

The latter has been below-par on his last two starts but knows the track and has produced some quality efforts here.

Semi-finals of the series take place on Monday, April 20, with the final the following Saturday.

The series is open to greyhounds whelped between January 1 and June 30, 2013 and is one of the biggest races of the year at the NSW South Coast track.
