Stars Come Out For Maitland Cup

By Stuart Turner

Potential star Black Frenzy, fellow gun local La Grand Logie and standout NSW chaser Winsome Prince head the list of contenders for this Friday’s Group 2  PPK Group Limited Maitland Cup (450m).

Unbeaten Black Frenzy is the latest promising hopeful from Jason Mackay’s kennel and looks a strong chance to take out the $40,000 top prize in the series.

The son of Fabregas x Rose Baby, Mackay’s charge has won five out of five since debuting at Richmond in early February.

Three of his successes have come at Maitland, including a terrific 24.93 for the 450m last month, as well as a Wentworth Park triumph last start on April 4.

He goes in the seventh heat here.

La Grand Logie jumps in heat three and is one to watch in the series despite some below-par recent efforts.

Jeff Eaton’s sprinter has not placed in his last five starts but has been facing high-quality opposition at Wentworth Park and Richmond.

The greyhound has a super record on his home track and looks a danger here.

Winsome Prince goes in heat eight on Friday looking to start his campaign for a second Group title.

Melinda Finn’s sprinter looked a potential superstar of the track after winning 13 of his first 14 starts, including the Group 3 Dapto Maiden in August last year.

He has not been able to win another major title since then but has 15 wins from 25 starts and is always a threat.

Others to watch include Zipping Saxon and I’m Pedro in heat one, Winsome Mission and recent Golden Easter Egg heat winner My Boy Snoop (heat two) and last Saturday night’s Group 3 New Sensation runner-up Spacecraft, who jumps in the sixth heat.

One interesting hopeful is Silent Effective (pictured), who jumps from box seven in the fifth heat.

Darren Sultana’s greyhound was one of the standouts of 2014 but has had his progress hampered recently after an injury late last year.

He enjoyed a morale-boosting win at Bulli on his last start over the 472m at Bulli in mid-February and if in full fitness and form could be a decent roughie chance for the series.

The final of the Maitland Cup takes place next Friday.
