Puppy Classic Next For Duo

By Stuart Turner

Lord Gee and Black Bear Lee are being primed for the forthcoming Group 3 Nowra Summer Puppy Classic (520m) after their terrific victories in this year’s Golden Easter Egg series.

A superb run in tricky conditions saw Lord Gee take out the $25,000-to-the-winner Group 3 New Sensation (520m) at Wentworth Park last Saturday night.

The victory earned trainer Christine Proctor and her husband Alan another big title after last year’s Group 1 Peter Mosman victory for Bessy Boo, who earned another win in one of the night’s minor races.

Christine Proctor said Lord Gee will next have a crack at the $25,000-to-the-winner Puppy Classic, which gets under way with heats on Monday, April 13.

“I’m so happy with him,” she said. “That was a terrific run.

“He has always shown us he had ability and he has really come on for us.

“We’ll nominate Lord Gee for the Puppy Classic now. It’s going to be a hard race with the likes of Black Bear Lee involved but hopefully he can be a big threat.”

Jumping from box four on a wet track, Lord Gee crossed to the rail early and held the inside line well.

Expected rivals Star Torana and No Donuts were both hampered by a scrimmage at the first corner which effectively ended both their chances.

The Proctors’ $9.30 shot finished excellently to win by almost three lengths from runner-up Aphorism  and Tiggerlong Katut in third.

“I had a vision before the race that he would run straight,” Christine Proctor said. “I just saw him doing it – and that’s what he did.

“I think Alan gets more emotional than me seeing our greyhounds run. I just get nervous.

“He is a fantastic greyhound and I’m delighted with him.”

The win took Lord Gee’s record to a solid eight wins and four minor placings from 17 starts.

Meanwhile, Ruth Matic also indicated that Black Bear Lee will be nominated for the Puppy Classic after his superb win in the Group 3 Ladbrokes Magic Maiden (520m).

The $5.30 shot earned his third win in the three-week series, which also had a $25,000 top prize, seeing the rest home by almost three lengths in a time of 30.27.

The Puppy Classic series is open to greyhounds whelped between January 1-June 30, 2013.

Semi-finals take place on Monday, April 20 with the final on Saturday, April 25.
