Lithgow Panther On The Prowl At Gosford

By Stuart Turner

Lithgow Panther put in an incredible run to win last start and trainer John Chapman is hoping for more success at Gosford tonight.

The highly promising chaser, who Chapman rates as  possibly the best kennel prospect he has seen in almost 30 years of training, goes for a fifth win in 12 starts  in the taragreyhounds.com.au Stakes (600m).

Lithgow Panther produced a superb display to win over the 618m last start at Richmond, coming from ten lengths back to defeat a decent field including Evoked and Knocka’s Return.

Chapman said he had big plans for his charge, who is a brother of 2015 Group 1 Paws of Thunder finalist Whittaker.

“I’m really excited about him,” Chapman said. “I’ve had raps on him for a long time.

“Ever since I started him as a pup his run home times were enormous.

“We will give him a couple more runs over the 600s and then head for the 700s at Richmond or Wentworth Park.”

A son of Mildean Panther x Mrs Trickett, Lithgow Panther has also recorded wins at Bulli and Dubbo as well as two triumphs at Richmond.

He has also drawn well here in the night's fifth race, with two wins and a placing from three previous starts from box four.

This is Lithgow Panther’s competitive debut at Gosford but Chapman is expecting another strong display.

“I have trialled him there over the shorter distance so he’s seen the track,” the trainer said.

“If you’re not a good starter (like Lithgow Panther) it doesn’t matter which box you have. As long as he can find the rail, he has a chance.”

Chapman, who works out of Lisdale in the NSW Central West, said Lithgow Panther was a “real racing dog”.

“He is a really sensible greyhound,” Chapman said.

“His run home times over 400m and 500m are unbelievable, but he handles himself well on the track as well. He knows how to work through the field.

“I’m excited about him, but anything can happen in greyhounds so I’m keeping my feet on the ground.”

Chapman thanked Lithgow Panther’s owners and his father Pat for their continuing support.

Another promising prospect, Chubba, looks a strong chance in race 10 tonight.

Cawbourne Havoc, who set a 400m track record at Gosford in October, goes in race one.

Other decent chances include Miss Migaro (race four), Poppy’s Jess in race six and Abunda in the eighth race.
