Cannonball The Next Target For Doonside Dani

By Jeff Collerson

Noted lid-pinger Doonside Dani will head to her home track of Richmond for Saturday night’s 400m Cannonball heats following her third successive all-the-way win at Saturday’s Wentworth Park meeting.

The Peter Rodgers-trained speedster flew out of box five and posted a slick initial split of 5.38 before comfortably holding off Chances Are and Envy to win in a tidy 30.18 for the 520m.

Doonside Dani had won over 535m at Richmond in a moderate 31.02 and in a fair 30.35 at Wentworth Park at her two previous starts.

Doonside Dani reminds me a lot of two other front-runners I trained, Cloudy Nite and Caddyshack," Peter Rodgers said.

"The more runs you give them under race conditions, the stronger they get.

"They are a bit like footballers who need match fitness and Doonside Dani is definitely getting stronger but the 400 metres of the Cannonball looks ideal."

Doonside Dani’s task at Richmond has been made easier due to Trendy Tia’s all-the-way win at Wentworth Park on Friday night.

Trainer Frank Daros had intended nominating Trendy Tia for the Cannonball but her win in a heat of a series for bitches on Friday means she must contest the final at Wentworth Park this weekend.

Zippy Chicki continued her remarkable Wentworth Park form with another all-the-way win on Friday night but for trainer Christine Proctor there is plenty of tension revolving around the greyhound.

Zippy Chicki has now earned more than $30,000 in a brief career and Friday’s was her fourth win in her past five Wentworth Park outings.

But her sister Miss Chicki, who actually had more early pace than Zippy Chicki, has been thrown out of training due to coming in season and been retired.

"Tiza Gold, another Wentworth Park winner I was training, also came in season and the owner has decided to breed from her," Christine said.

"I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that Zippy Chicki isn’t the next one to come in season because she is going so well."

Wentworth Park fans will get their first look at DEAN Swain’s National Futurity winner Rue De Kahn next Saturday night.

"I plan to nominate her for Wenty next Saturday and enter Push It, who led and got run down last Saturday, for the Friday meeting," DEAN said.

"I set Rue De Kahn for the Futurity after she won her maiden race because I knew how good she was.

"I train her for Queenslander breeder Michael Laffey and she is his first group one winner.

"He phoned to tell me he watched the replay of Rue De Kahn's Futurity win at 11pm and midnight on Friday and he was planning to get up and watch it again at 7am Saturday.

“My bitch Unopposed led and was run down by Victoria’s Hotshow Lil in the 2002 Futurity so I was due to win one."

Richmond Race Club President Ross Burton’s skill at securing modestly priced greyhounds which go on to win at Wentworth Park continued on Saturday night when Knot Telling Ya ran down Prince Tanga to win the AAA Radiator Specialists Stakes.

“I bought Knot Telling Ya for $8,000 after the dog had won two races at Wentworth Park and he ran second for me behind Boyce Road in a heat of the National Derby at The Gardens late last month."

See you next week!
