Harry Is On The Way Back

By Jeff Collerson

It’s a far cry from the glory days of Kirsty’s Charity, Tenthill Doll and He’s My Future, but Harry Sarkis’ winning double at Richmond last Wednesday indicates the veteran trainer is poised for a big return in 2014.

Sarkis trained Dark Onex and Papa Roach to win a pair of 400m sprints and has 23 greyhounds, mostly juveniles, in work.

He trained Kirsty’s Charity, the best stayer of her era, to win the 1988 Sydney Cup in race record time and took out the 1996 Golden Easter Egg with Tenthill Doll, the NSW Greyhound of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

More recently Sarkis trained top class stayer He’s My Future, who earned $82,000 from 17 wins, and around the same period, between 2011 and 2012, he prepared Stylish William for nine wins and over $31,000 in stakes.

“At this stage the most promising dog in my kennels is Unseen Character, who had his first start at Bathurst on Monday, when his sister Capriati will also make her debut,’ he said.

“I also have a high opinion of Alkina while Dark Onex, who won at Richmond, will be better over longer than 400m.

“My luck is due to change as my best prospect, Fire Went Wild, has dropped a back muscle while Limit Up and Limit Down have each torn hip supports.

“I won’t be at Wenty with my dogs for a while as I don’t believe in pushing young greyhounds but I think several will make the grade there eventually."
