Rob's Hoping For A Change Of Luck in Perth Cup

By Noel Ovington

While Victorian trainer Rob Britton sees Cannington as his "bogie' track it hasn't stopped him heading west for Saturday night's heats of the Group 1 Sky Racing Perth Cup (530m) and Group 1 Galaxy (715m)

Britton has last start Group 1 Sportingbet Paws Of Thunder winner Iona Seven (pictured) engaged in the Perth Cup while Gold Affair Two, Cheetah Zorro and Born Ali will line up in heats of the Galaxy.

"I took the four dogs to Perth on Monday and then came back home," Britton said.

"The weather was good on Monday and Tuesday - around 26 degrees - and they are only predicting low 30s during the week and then 26 on Saturday night."

Iona Seven will start from box seven in the third of eight Perth Cup heats, where only the winners progress to the final.

"Iona Seven hasn't been to Cannington before but I gave her a slip on the track earlier in the week," Britton said.

"But just like Sydney she has to negotiate a wide box."

Britton is relying on some "local knowledge" from his sister - leading WA trainer Linda - in the lead up to Saturday night.

"Linda told me it is not an overly strong heat but there is a lot of speed in the race which is a concern," he said.

"Iona Seven has done really well since coming back from Sydney and I couldn't be happier with her going into the race."

in the Galaxy Gold Affair Two will start from box seven in heat one, Cheetah Zorro (box eight) will contest heat two while Born Ali (box four) is in the fourth and final heat.

Missing from the series is Britton's star stayer Lucy Wires.

"She pulled up a bit scratchy after the Summer Plate at Wentworth Park so I'm giving her three weeks off," he said.

"The three I have in the Galaxy are all dogs that make finals. Cheetah Zorro is a Group 1 winner but I wouldn't say she is an outstanding chance but I think all three are capable of making the final if they have a bit of luck. The Galaxy is a is a winnable race.

"The problem is I don't seem to have a lot of luck in Perth but it has got to change some day.

"I keep saying it will all change when I draw a good box but that hasn't happened yet. I have drawn box seven or eight in every heat of the Perth Cup I have contested but hopefully Iona Seven can make it through to the final."

And the dog to beat in the series?

"To be honest Linda has a very good team at the moment and I think Zelemar Fever (heat four) is the dog to beat," he said.
