Collins Family Celebrate Another Success

By Noel Ovington

When Dyna Willow scored a last stride win over Destini Fireball in last Saturday night's Group 2 Sportingbet Summer Distance Plate (720m) at Wentworth Park it was a victory for the entire Collins family.

Dyna Willow is trained at Lara, in Victoria, by Steve Collins, but as a professional greyhound trainer with a large kennel, he could not be successful without plenty of help.

And that assistance is provided by Steve's wife Heather, their daughter Tammy and son Jake.

Jake was the sole family member at Wentworth Park last weekend. He travelled to Sydney in the early hours of Saturday morning with Dyna Willow and handled her in the race, before returning to Lara on Sunday.

Jake (pictured with Dyna Willow), who turns 20 next month, is often given the job of "travelling foreman".

"Jake works full-time here and also trains a couple of dogs himself. He grew up with greyhounds so when it came to choosing a career he didn't really have much choice," father Steve laughed.

"But seriously he loves greyhound racing. Both Jake and Tammy travel with the dogs which is great because there is so much to do here and it is hard for me to get away.

"Tammy works for us full-time as well so it is a real family operation."

And there is no doubt that Dyna Willow is the kennel star and family favourite.

"As soon as we put her up to 600m we knew she was going to be something special," Jake said after Dyna Willow's win.

"She usually likes to get out and run but tonight she showed a lot of heart to run down Destini Fireball."

And at a little over two-and-a-half years of age Dyna Willow has a bright future.

"She will only get better because she only has her first '700' in August last year," Jake said.

At her previous visit to Wentworth Park Dyna Willow beat National Distance Champion Smart Valentino in the Group 3 Schweppes Summer Cup Final (720m) in a fast 41.92.

"She races well at Wentworth Park and it makes the trip worthwhile when you can win a group race," Jake said.

"I don't mind travelling with the dogs. It certainly helps that I love greyhound racing.

"I've grown up around dogs and hopefully I can make a career out of training. That's the plan anyway."
