A Jet Upstages The Stars

The final of the inaugural $50,000 Southern Stars highlighted Goulburn's Friday meeting but there wasn't a more impressive winner on the card than Ashby Jet, who staged a remarkable last-to-first performance to win over 440m.

Trained by Allan Manwaring for his wife Eloise, Ashby Jet took his record to eight wins from 14 starts and recorded his fourth successive win when he easily ran down promising sprinters Royal Sweetie and Wentworth Park winner Forever Thankful to cover the 440m in a nippy 24.89.

"Ashby Jet is from the second litter whelped by our brood bitch Big Bad Brenda, but while Eloise owns her and I am listed as his trainer, he really belong to our 19-year-old daughter Bella,'' Allan Manwaring said.

"Bella is a full-time university student but she just loves this dog and whenever she is free she handles him on race day and is already planning to keep him as her pet when his racing days are over.

"Ashby Jet turned two in April but is still very immature, he is like a big baby.

"He gets very hyped up on race day but after he went so well at Goulburn on Friday we are making plans to get him to Wentworth Park to have a crack over 520m.

"Ashby Jet was educated from the 350m boxes at Goulburn but last Friday was the first time he had come from the 440m starting point.

"He seemed to get off balance in the middle stages but got to the line well and after a couple more 440m races at Goulburn to toughen him up we will bring him to Wentworth Park.

"Ashby Jet is the most exciting dog we have had for a long time and we still don't know how good he is.''

Karen and Allan Woods make regular trips from their kennels at Nabiac, near Taree, to Wentworth Park and now their daughter Nerida Woods could soon be joining them after landing a winner with her first greyhound on Saturday.

Nerida won at Newcastle's Ladbrokes Gardens with Trixie Bella, who led all the way to win a 400m sprint, just 24 hours after that greyhound's litter brother Cousin Vinnie had won over 515m there for Allan and Karen.

The Woods clan went within just under a length of notching three wins in 24 hours when Mr Beethoven finished a close second to Brother Rick over 520m at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Named after the slobbering Saint Bernard dog in the hit 1992 movie due to his similar markings., Mr Beethoven won in 30.24 at Wentworth Park on July 16 but produced his personal best city figures of 29.90 in finishing second on Saturday.

Allan Woods was over the moon at Wentworth Park while watching daughter Nerida's greyhound Trixie Bella win at Ladbrokes Gardens, saying: "Trixie Bella and Cousin Vinnie are from the same litter we bred, by My Redeemer from Ellie Belles.

"All the pups in the litter were black with the exception of Trixie Bella, a dark brindle, and that colouring difference was why Nerida selected her to become her first greyhound.''
