Queenslander Wrecks His Opposition

Queensland Jury took out the 2017 National Sprint Championship title and Shipwreck looks to be an outstanding chance in this year's series after clocking near record time at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Trained by Queensland veteran Ned Snow, Shipwreck began cleanly from box eight and romped away from a top class Free-For-All lineup to score by five lengths in a sensational 29.32 for the 520m.

Those figures compare well with the 29.07 track record set more than eight years ago by Shakey Jakey, and were a sharp improvement on Shipwreck's impressive 29.64 solo trial at WP on July 20.

Grafton trainer Dave Irwin, who handled Shipwreck for trainer Ned Snow, said: "The dog will now head to Albion Park for Thursday night's Queensland heats of the National Sprint Championship.

"Ned was not keen on starting him tonight after the dog trialled so well here 10 days ago but I pointed out that some greyhounds need a couple of looks at Wentworth Park to produce their best form.

"Ned was also a bit concerned about how Shipwreck would handle box eight because the dog is a pretty good railer.

"But when he trialled recently at Grafton, Shipwreck went as straight as a gun-barrel and that indicated he would cope with the wide alley.

"Shipwreck has a reputation for being a bit slow out of the traps but plenty of recent box work has improved his manners at the start.''

Trunkey John turned three in April but was having only his 22nd race when he led throughout to win a 520m fifth grade on Saturday night in a fast 29.89.

After the race trainer Tony Godden said: "He has been plagued by injuries all his life which is why he has done so little racing.

"Last week I gave Trunkey John a post-to-post slip at Wenty and he recorded 24.05, very quick time for a fifth grader.

"When he drew box eight tonight through I wasn't confident because the dog is desperate for an inside draw but he nailed the start and was able to cross to the lead.

"It's pleasing to see him win his first race at WP because when Peter Sims broke him in, he rated Trunkey John as among the fastest dogs he has educated.''

Training honours on Saturday night went to Peter Rodgers, who won with litter sister and brother Lightnin' Ethics and Simply Limelight.

Lightnin' Ethics, owned by successful trainer David Smith, led all the way in a fast 29.75 after reeling off early splits of 5.38 and 13.73.

Simply Limelight, who is owned by Rodgers' partner Pat Breen, came from third early to hit the front turning for home and winning in 29.99.

Rodgers was not surprised at Lightnin' Ethics' fast time, pointing out: "When she finished fourth at WP on July 13 she raced with her muzzle jammed into her mouth.

"Then, when she finished second to Simply Limelight at WP last week, she was probably unlucky not to beat him because she hit the running rail.''

Smartest win on Saturday night was by veteran Royal Emgrand, who notched his 14th city success in 29.97.

Royal Emgrand appeared to be crowded for room when a close fourth, on the rails, on the back straight, but showed rare track sense to pull to the outside and sweep around the leaders, hitting the front coming to the home turn.

Trainer Luke Azzopardi said later: "When he did that it didn't surprise me because Royal Emgrand is an extremely intelligent dog.

"At home he knows what to do and if he hears me sing out to him loudly he scampers into his kennel immediately.

"He is an absolute dream to train.''
