Smith Team Set For Success At Bulli

By Jeff Collerson
Calamity Ethics won in well outside her best Bulli 400m time on Wednesday night but trainer David Smith believes she can improve on her 22.62sec performance when she contests Saturday's ninth race, a fifth grade over the same course.

On Wednesday Calamity Ethics led throughout from box one to win the opening race but had previously recorded 22.41 over the Bulli 400m trip.

"Forget the times for the first two races on Wednesday as it was blowing like a hurricane,'' Smith said.

"Given normal weather conditions Calamity Ethics can go faster and because she pulled up so well after Wednesday's win I expect her to run a big race on Saturday.''

Smith has five strong chances on Saturday as he will also be represented by Rodeo Ethics, who has box six in race four, Super Estrella (box one, race six), Ice Cream Story (box seven, race seven) and Five Second Rule (box four, race 10).

Rodeo Ethics was a warm favourite when seventh from box one at Bulli on Wednesday but Smith gives him a good show on Saturday.

"He was disputing the lead at the first turn with the ultimate winner Tap Out Lucy but wanted to run up the track was checked off her before dropping out,'' Smith said.

"Rodeo Ethics might be better suited drawn away from the fence in Saturday's race.

"I really like Super Estrella's (pictured) chances because she had no luck when second to Frank Hurst's dog Sound Of Silence on Wednesday.

"She is against him again but was only beaten a length on Wednesday and the move from box four to the rails will help her.

"The opposite is the case for Ice Cream Story who won over 515m on Wednesday from box two but has box seven in a shorter race on Saturday.

"I think they might be a bit slippery for her in the early stages this time.

"Five Second Rule was run down in the straight when second, beaten under a length, in 26.13 on Wednesday and he has a good chance on Saturday.

"Although he has box four he tends to run in the centre of the track anyway and having a vacant box on his outside should help.''

Tap Out Lucy and Red Hot Mouse won for trainer Rod Metselaar at Bulli on Wednesday and they clash, along with their kennelmates Tap Out Classy and Tap Out Diesel, in Saturday's fourth race.

Tap Out Lucy is likely to be favourite after drawing box one following her fast 26.28 win on Wednesday but her trainer is not over-confident.

"Tap Out Lucy wants to get off the track slightly, she seems to drive up better when she is on the outside of her rivals,'' Metselaar said.

"Red Hot Mouse won in 26.26 on Wednesday and I was rapt in her win because she led all the way and I thought being a little 24kg bitch she might be better suited on a two turn track like Dapto.

"Tap Out Classy is the opposite of his sister Tap Out Lucy because he needs to find the rails.

"He was very unlucky when unplaced from box five on Wednesday and if her reaches the fence without too much trouble he can win, he has clocked 26.46 there.''

Best value bet on Saturday could be Lucky Eleven, who has box one in race eight, a 400m fifth grade.

Trainer Andrew Bell, who chalked up his 100th winner for the year at Richmond on Wednesday, is keen on Lucky Eleven's chances.

"She has not raced at Bulli for me but when she was in her previous trainer Jodie Lord's kennels she clocked smart times over 472m and 515m at this track and she is drawn to win on Saturday,'' Bell said.
