O'Brien Hoping For Magical Night At Dapto

By Stuart Turner

The Blacktown Workers Club might be a lively place next Tuesday if in-form sprinter Rubelly Magic can win Thursday’s cracking Greyhound Recorder Silver Collar Final (520m) at Dapto.

Rodney O’Brien’s greyhound jumps from box two in the high-quality $5000-to-the-winner decider and looks a strong chance to claim her 11th win in 25 starts.

Rubelly Magic has won has won her last three starts – all at Dapto – and is a formidable opponent from the inside boxes.

Western Sydney-based O’Brien turned 70 this week and is hoping for belated celebrations if his charge triumphs.

“I’m not overly confident but she’s got a chance,” the trainer said. “If she gets out like she can she can win.

“We usually go to the Blacktown Workers Club on Tuesday night with friends.

“I’ll be buying the drinks next Tuesday if we win - but I won’t mind that.”

All eight greyhounds are live chances in a super-looking final, with reliable Sokyo (box one) and explosive Paua To Roar (pictured) in box four both tempting contenders.

City-class Rubelly Magic loves the track, though, and looks ready to win according to her trainer.

“They way she gets out quick and utilises the rail here is superb,” O’Brien said.

“Being a tight track, that first turn here can be tricky if you are caught out wide. It’s just ideal if you are on the inside.

“She had a problem with her wrist after the heat but now she’s 100 per cent.

“She’s been bouncing around this week like Pepe Le Pew.”

Training greyhounds is a real labour of love for retired truck driver O’Brien, who was a former hobby trainer before seriously injuring his hands in an accident.

He spent nearly two decades away from the sport before deciding to give training another crack in retirement.

His son is a part-owner of his greyhounds and Rubelly Magic is named after two of his beloved grandchildren – Ruby and Elly.

“The kids love the greyhounds,” he said. “They sit in the grass with them and the dogs put their heads in their lap.

“I needed a hobby after I retired and I cannot think of a better one than working with greyhounds. They are beautiful animals – lovely to work with.

“I love the people you meet, it challenges your mind and keeps me active.”

Penny Grove and Fantastic Spiral also look strong chances in races seven and eight respectively.
