Life Out West Suiting Chrissy's Double

By Stuart Turner

New surroundings have certainly worked wonders for Chrissy’s Double who aims to extend her winning record at Cannington on Saturday.

The sprinter jumps from box eight in the meeting's 11th race, the New Year’s Eve Bookings 9458 9182 Stakes (297m), going for a sixth straight victory.

Chrissy’s Double started her racing career on the eastern seaboard but was transferred to owner/trainer Jen Thompson’s kennels earlier this year.

With a bit of TLC the pair are proving a successful partnership.

“Her confidence was low,” Thompson, who is based in the Perth suburb of Southern River, said. “I think from memory she had had a fall, so she was a bit nervous.

“She wasn’t good from the boxes either which we needed to work on.

“She just goes in the races that suit her now, plus we have walk-in, walk-out kennels here which she likes. The greyhounds can lie in the sun all day if they like.

“She’s lovely to have around the kennels and it’s good to see her doing well.”

Chrissy’s Double’s record from the pink rug is unconvincing but she seems to have the ability to win here.

“There’s good pace inside her here so it will be hard for her to get across,” Thompson said.

“I didn’t think she could win from the one last week (and) she’s a clever racer.

“I’d give her a good chance here.”

Others to watch at Cannington include Quartz Bale, who should return to winning ways in race two.

Another star of the Paul Stuart kennel, Starlight Jack, goes for six wins from six in race eight.

Look for Tureaud (race five), race six’s Takahashi and Expect A Guess in race seven to complete the quaddie.

Thompson was a former horse racing strapper and worked with top trainers and jockeys.

The 65-year-old had to stop work with a back injury and decided to give greyhounds a go.

“I’ve been an animal lover all my life,” Thompson, who used to breed Jack Russell pups before turning to greyhounds. “It started off as a hobby, but then I got a decent litter and away things went.

“I think I get more enjoyment out of breeding greyhounds rather racing.

“If you go in greyhound racing for money then you are wasting your time.

“I think I get more enjoyment out of breeding greyhounds rather racing.

“I get a similar buzz to racing when I get a winner, though.”
