Double Twist A Firm Paws Of Thunder Favourite

By Noel Ovington

Despite changes to the composition of the field for the Group 1 Sportingbet Paws Of Thunder over the past 48 hours, Double Twist has remained the pre-post favourite in fixed odds betting.

With the scratchings of the Victorian pair of Allen Malik and National Time, the emergencies Punch One Out and Peter Rocket now go into Saturday night's field.

Allen Malik has a torn achilles and will be sidelined for at least two months, while National Time is suffering from acidosis.

Sportingbet has Double Twist (pictured) at $3.40 ahead of Punch One Out ($4), Buckle Up Wes ($4.40) and Iona Seven ($5.50), with Veyron Bale and Peter Rocket both at $7. Boyce Road is a $15 chance with Manyana Groper the outsider of the field at $41.

Trainer Garry Edwards said Double Twist pulled up the best she ever has after her impressive 29.56 heat win.

"She pulled up enormous," Edwards said.

"She showed good track sense in her heat and didn't get knocked around.

"When I let her out in the yard on Sunday morning she was running around feeling pretty good.

"She went up the straight on Tuesday morning but she will have a pretty easy week. All the hard work has been done and now it's up to her on the night."

Edwards said he has done nothing different with Double Twist execpt for a slight change to her feeding, but has noticed a big change in her racing pattern at her past few starts.

"She seems to have turned a corner," he said.

"Whereas she would always run around a dog, now she is railing underneath them.

"I haven't done anything different with her so I can really can't work out a reason for the change."

Edwards said he has noticed the difference since returning from an unsuccessful trip to Sandown for the Melbourne Cup.

"As soon as we came back from Melbourne she just seemed to go up a gear," he said.

"A lot of good trainers say a trip away can make a dog so maybe that is the case with Double Twist.

"You'd swear she was wearning a GPS at the moment because her track sense is just incredible.

"No matter how many times you go through a race in your head it rarely works out the way you think it will, but I'm just hoping she has a safe trip on Saturday night."
