Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase Maiden

Another Chasing Back To Back MDC Features

By Michael Cowley
It’s not quite of the calibre of what She’s A Pearl is attempting, but owner Mark Duclos will be chasing a unique back-to-back double on TAB Million Dollar Chase night at Wentworth Park on September 24.

Back on May 7 at headq uarters the Jodie Lord-trained She’s A Pearl was brilliant taking out the main event, and on Friday night she will take another step in the Chase semi-finals, towards defending that title and capturing another $1 million.

On that same night back in May, Jodie won the first feature of the night, when We Don’t Share took out the TAB Million Dollar Chase Maiden final, giving his owner, highly-respected media personality, Greyhound Racing NSW’s Mark Duclos, a much valued feature race victory.

Fast forward four months and this time Jodie’s husband Andy Lord is the trainer but again Duclos is the owner of a favoured runner in the final of the TAB Million Dollar Chase Maiden after Canya Smoke Them finally lived up to his potential with an impressive 29.82s win, the fastest heat time of the night.

“He showed what he can do tonight,” Lord’s kennel representative Ray Dickson said. “When you know how fast they are, you just need a bit of luck and he got that tonight and he showed what he can do.”

Added the jubilant owner: “He came off the back of a nice trial on Sunday morning, and Andy was confident. The dog has trialled fast, but to see him put it all together … I’m stoked and I’m sure Andy is as well.”

He was also no doubt stoked after the dog drew box one for the final.

Second in the heat went to went to Modern Swinger with False Confidence running third.

The opening heat of the Maiden went to Wilson’s Pick who roared to the lead clocking 5.42s early and then just managed to hold on to score in 30.51s for trainer Martin Bowe, giving him his first Wentworth Park 520m winner.

“I’m happy as Larry. Yeah she came out really good,” said Bowe. “It’s a nice one to get. If she can come out as quick as that in the final, I will be happy.”

Second went to Miss Song Bird with Zipping Senorita a close-up third.

The third heat went to the Jason Magri-trained first starter, Comet A Cost who posted 30.01s figures in beating Ddjaki and Cooper’s Hawk.

“It was a nice win,” said Magri who revealed the dog had trialled quicker than that time in the lead-up to the race. “He just got dragged down on the first corner and probably lost his momentum, but he picked himself up really well again.

“He’s a nice dog. He’s still got to learn how to race and will benefit nicely from that run tonight. He has got good traits, he’s always been like that. He’ll be a nice dog.”

The $15,000 to the winner TAB Million Dollar Chase Maiden Final will be held on September 24.
