Magic Display Is Paying Her Way

By Jeff Collerson

Magic Display is paying for her 21-year-old owner Dale Ogden’s university course and after already earning $16,590 chases a $40,000 pot of gold in Tuesday night’s Woy Woy Poultry Gold Cup final at Gosford.

Dale, who lives at WYONG and attends University at Newcastle, is the grand-daughter of well- known Grafton trainers Len and Evelyn Harris.

"Dale happened to be visiting us when we had two litters of pups in the yard so I suggested she select one and we would train it for her," Len recalled.

"Out of 16 puppies she chose Magic Display so she is not a bad judge as her pup turned out to be the best of them all.

"Evelyn has still not transferred Magic Display into Dale’s name because she thinks that might jinx her but the prizemoney is putting Dale through college.

"Unfortunately Magic Display, who has won 10 of 22 starts, has drawn box four at Gosford but there is a lot of pace in this race and if the leaders get to the first corner together anything can happen.

"Evelyn and I have been setting Magic Display for this race for several weeks so the timing is perfect."

Although he clocked a slick 29.14 winning over 515m at Bulli at his 101st start on Wednesday, Bomb Disposal will still be retired.

Trainer Neil Staines announced after the dog finished third at Wentworth Park on December 28, at his 100th race, that Bomb Disposal would become a pet after the Bulli race.

Surprisingly, Neil says he will stick by that decision, despite Bomb Disposal’s slick Bulli win, recording remarkable time for a four-and-a-half year old dog.

"I am worried that if I keep putting him around in races at his age he might get hurt and neither myself or the dog’s owners, Richard and Jessie Peil, would want that to happen," Neil said.

"We want to find a good home for him with someone who lives close to me or to the owners.

"If that doesn’t eventuate I’ll keep him at my place for the rest of his days.

"He has been a wonderful dog and we certainly owe him that much."

Bomb Disposal retires with earnings of nearly $40,000 from 18 wins, 14 seconds and two dozen thirds.

When Hobart Thousand winner Paw Licking’s litter sister Kingsbrae Molly came in season recently trainer-breeder Charlie Northfield didn’t hesitate to retire her.

After beating her now famous brother in the 2012 Pop Northfield Maiden Classic at Casino, Kingsbrae Molly broke a hock.

Despite 11 months on the sidelines she returned to win a second race but then came in season and was mated to El Grand Senor.

Kingsbrae Molly is due to whelp her first litter on Wednesday and Charlie reckons she looks as if she “could have half a dozen puppies.’’

"I prefer breeding from young bitches so Kingsbrae Molly was ideal," Charlie said.

"I have 10 in work at present with easily the fastest being Take The Weight, who has won 20 from 47 starts.

"He is not a good box dog but has terrific speed when he hits the ground.

"I might give Take The Weight another run at Wentworth Park early this year.

"I took him and his kennelmate Easy Drinking there in October but they were in the same race and knocked each other down going through the first turn.

"My most promising younger dog is Lunatic Bob who was running 23 seconds flat at Casino but then hurt his toe.

"When he came back he tore his leg open after hitting the running rail and since that hasn’t been quite the same dog.

"But Lunatic Bob doesn’t turn two until the end of March and if I can get his confidence back he should pay his way in 2014."
