Wallacia Mist Stuns Them At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Wallacia Mist stunned not only racegoers but even trainer Luke Brown with her dazzling 29.55 all-the-way win to set the fastest time in Friday night's nine heats of the listed Ausure Ultra Sense at Wentworth Park.

Wallacia Miss had not previously broken 30sec at Wentworth Park but came out "under the lids'' from box four to win heat eight by seven lengths, carving out brilliant splits of 5.39, 13.73 and 17.86 and running home in a best of the heats 11.69.

After the race trainer Luke Brown said: "I knew she had the ability to break 30sec if ever she nailed the start.

"I thought if she jumped well she could run around 29.80 so I'm pleasantly surprised to see her go as quick as she did tonight.''

Second fastest heat winner was the Mark Gatt-trained Leg Speed, who overcame his customary slow start to rail into fourth spot on the back straight before pouncing on the lead at the top of the straight.

Leg Speed came away to win by four lengths in 29.71, holding off the luckless Zipping Optimise, trained by Jason Magri.

After the race Mark Gatt said: "Early in the betting they had Jason's dog favourite ahead of my dog, but Leg Speed had a terrific draw while Zipping Optimise looked badly positioned in box six.

"Leg Speed got the good run going through the catching pen that I expected him to get from that draw, while Zipping Optimise was in trouble running seventh.

"Swap boxes and I reckon Zipping Optimise would have beaten Leg Speed.''

Magri atoned for the bad luck with Zipping Optimise later in the night, winning heat six with Speedy Pie in 29.72 and heat seven with Stop It in 29.85.

Speedy Pie was third away from box eight but swept down the outside of the field to head off pacemaker Miss Mila to lead at the first turn.

She drew away to win by nearly five lengths while Stop It gave Magri a winning double despite missing the jump from box four.

Stop It showed blistering speed when he hit the ground and after being second at the first turn railed to the lead on the back straight.

He dashed away but in the straight the early effort took its toll and he faded to win by a neck in 29.85.

After the race Jason Magri said: "There is nothing between Speedy Pie and Stop It.

"Stop It possesses tremendous early pace but he is a risky beginner.''

Au Contraire, who had been runner-up at her previous three Wentworth Park appearances, broke through for an all-the-way win in heat two, narrowly holding off Miss Mcgraw to score by a neck in 29.82.

Sam Sultana, her trainer, said later: "I was disappointed when Au Contraire drew box seven but gave her a chance of getting across to the fence when Marvel Zombie, who has plenty of early pace and had box six, was scratched.

"Even so, I thought my bitch was 'gone' when Miss Mcgraw charged up to her coming to the home turn.''

Other heat winners were Cawbourne Apollo in 29.74, Camilla Keeping in 29.89, Betty Birdcage in 30.01 and Foran Banner, whose 30.09 was the slowest of the nine qualifying races, meaning she will only make first reserve status in the $25,000 to the winner final on April 20.

In heat one of the GRNSW Masters the Noelene Holloway-trained Fascinate Trump defeated his litter sister and kennelmate Fascinate Mel in 29.90.

Father Rick, early favourite for the final, edged out Cumbria Kid in 30.15 in heat two.
