Megatron Now Chasing An Egg

By Jeff Collerson
Five months ago Zipping Megatron took out the Million Dollar Chase Maiden final but after Saturday night's Wentworth Park meeting the Jason Magri-trained powerhouse is widely rated the dog to beat in next month's $350,000 to the winner Golden Easter Egg.

Zipping Megatron led all the way from box one to win the MDC Maiden in October in 29.42 but his effort to take his Wenty tally to six wins from seven starts on Saturday night was mind-boggling.

Plenty of experts felt he could not win from box eight but Zipping Megatron, despite being last to leave the starting traps, railed into a close fifth position on the back straight and pounced on the lead approaching the home bend.

He careered away to beat boom youngster Not Without by five lengths in 29.45, running home in a sensational 11.50.

In Saturday's other Easter Egg rehearsal the Jodie Lord-trained Nangar Larry upset hot favourite Good Odds Cobber in 29.79, after outsider My Hepburn had made the pace before hanging on for third.

Dubbo trainer Charmaine Roberts had a night to remember on Saturday winning with Zali Keeping, Aston Costello and Cindy Keeping.

Zali Keeping, who was making her Wentworth Park debut, began brilliantly from box two to win a 520m fifth grade in 29.52 after reeling off dazzling early splits of 5.37 and 13.73.

After the race Roberts' partner Shayne Stiff said: "We gave Zali Keeping a box-to-box at Wenty on Tuesday and she had trialled well at Sandown last month.

"She clocked 29.55 in a 515m trial there but then was beaten twice out of a place in races at Sandown on February 25 and 29.

"We will now target the Simply Limelight New Sensation heats on April 3 with her.''

Cindy Keeping, who clocked a personal best 29.64, is also eligible for the age restricted New Sensation series.

National Futurity winner Gets Late Early produced quick early sections of 5.39 and 13.77 to notch her third win in six Wentworth Park appearances in a 520m fourth grade on Saturday.

Gets Late Early's overall time was a personal best 29.73 and trainer Minnie Finn said later: "She loves a wide draw so box eight tonight suited her.

"She is eligible for the New Sensation but after the way she went tonight I'm undecided whether to set her for that race or for the Golden Easter Egg.''

Cumbria Kid, who was runner-up, beaten a half length, to Jay Is Jay in the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase final at Wentworth Park on October 13, lifted his earnings to nearly $200,000 with a tenacious 29.81 win in a 520m Masters race on Saturday night.

Cumbria Kid's success took his prizemoney to $199,710 but the dog won't be contesting the Golden Easter Egg.

Trainer Steve Fitch said: "He had a good draw in box two tonight because his brother Cumbria Mal had box three and he is a wide runner who gave him plenty of room to move early.

"Just the same Cumbria Kid had trouble getting underneath Coco Model on the back straight so for him to come away and win by nearly two lengths was a good effort.

"But while I will probably nominate him for a 600m race at Dapto on Thursday, his goal at Wentworth Park will be the $10,000 GRNSW Masters Final at Wentworth Park on Easter Egg final night, April 13.''
