Little Brother Makes Stunning Return

By Jeff Collerson
Flying Ricciardo's younger half-brother Tokyo Drift made a stunning return after eight months on the sidelines by toppling boom speedster Armatree Cash at Richmond on Monday.

The Lynne Aldous-trained Tokyo Drift zipped over the 320m in a best of the night 17.92sec, only .07sec outside the current track record.

It took the lightly-raced Tokyo Drift's tally to an impressive 12 wins and four seconds from 19 starts.

Tokyo Drift is by Aston Dee Bee from Lynne Aldous' bitch Megalodon, whose previous litter by Barcia Bale included the sensational front-runner Flying Ricciardo

"Megalodon was bought at auction for only $1200 and Flying Ricciardo was purchased by Sam Sultana and his daughter Kristy at auction as well,'' Aldous said.

"People have often reminded me that I sold Flying Ricciardo but it has never worried me - in fact, I got such a thrill out of watching him win 22 of his 27 races as well as seeing him now making a name for himself at stud.

"Tokyo Drift is such a big dog he has been susceptible to various problems but I'm so proud of him.

"He is great now and I will nominate him for a 280m race at Wentworth Park on Friday and after that, I intend bumping him up in distance because he is not just a short course dog.

"His win on Monday gave me an early birthday present because I turned 68 on Wednesday, having had a trainer's licence since I was 21.

"People who criticise the care of greyhounds are simply ignorant and my kids often tease me that we had air-conditioning in the kennels way before we were able to afford the same luxury for our house.''

Aldous has high hopes for four puppies whelped by Megalodon to Aston Rupee which are now 12 months old.

Trainer CHRIS O'Brien concedes Fortified "hit a brick wall" when a fading fourth over 520m at Wentworth Park last Friday night but is hoping the "easier" Dapto run over the same trip can enable her to win her heat of the Easter Bunny on Thursday night.

Fortified is by Pindari Express from the champion brood bitch Banjo Tifia but so far has not replicated the deeds of her famous older half-siblings like Mortified, Quantifiable, Modern Swinger, and others who have won $450,000 prizemoney.

At Wentworth Park on Friday, Fortified sped away with a seven lengths lead on the back straight but was swamped in the run home and finished fourth to Nangar Gypsy, Au Contraire, and Ashby Lisa.

"Part of her problem is she expands so much energy before and during a race,'' O'Brien said.

"Everything Fortified does at home or on the track is way over the top, she even gobbles her food down, she always seems to be in such a hurry and with time I'm hoping she settles down better.

"Fortified has won seven of her 10 starts at the provincials, clocked 22.32 over 400m at Bulli and has recorded a fast 16.81 for the Dapto 297m trip so I'm hoping a return to  that course on Thursday will get her back into the winning list.''

At Wentworth Park last Friday Fortified reeled off early splits of 5.41 and 13.80 so she should give her rivals on Thursday something to chase.

She will exit box seven in heat four and boasts a flawless winning record in two previous races wearing the black rug.
