Fast Times and Impressive Performances at Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Before Saturday night's Wentworth Park meeting trainer Greg Remfry had no intention of entering his Richmond Oaks winner Shanghai Suzie in the up-coming Golden Easter Egg and was setting her for the Group 3 Ladies Bracelet heats at headquarters on April 27.

But Shanghai Suzie's blistering all-the-way fifth-grade win in a personal best 29.58 on Saturday has Remfry re-considering his plans.

Not only did Shanghai Suzie post time which was .20sec faster than her previous best Wentworth Park figures, but she reeled off a dazzling second split of 13.67.

After Saturday's win, Remfry said: "Her fast time tonight did not completely surprise me because in her last trial before this race she went sensationally at Dapto, faster than she had ever gone.

"I thought she was probably around two-tenths of a second not good enough to tackle the Golden Easter Egg heats on March 30 but after tonight I might have to give it more thought.''

The Group 3 Ladies Bracelet final at Wentworth Park on May 4 is worth $25,000 to the winner, a far cry from the $350,000 cheque awaiting the Golden Easter Egg victor.

Remaining on target for the Easter Egg though are up-and-coming prospect Superstar Ethics and Gosford Cup winner Good Odds Cobber who each won brilliantly on Saturday night.

Superstar Ethics flopped out of box four in a 520m fifth grade but railed into second spot on the back straight and strode to the front soon after before coming away to win by eight lengths.

His sizzling 29.44 win at Wentworth Park a week earlier caught the attention of the stewards but on Saturday the Peter Rodgers-trained dog went even quicker, stopping the clock at 29.41.

His run home time on Saturday was 11.45, .01sec slower than his March 9 Wentworth Park figures.

After Saturday's race, Peter Rodgers said: "I don't think I will give him another race before the March 30 Easter Egg heats.

"What would be the point of that, so I'll save him for the Egg heats and hope he draws close to the rails.''

Good Odds Cobber took his record from box one to four wins from four appearances when he led throughout to beat fellow Easter Egg contenders Nangar Larry and Hooked On Fame in Saturday's top-grade race in 29.49.

Good Odds Cobber's second section was a flying 13.66 and the Frank Hurst-trained dog has now won 15 from 24 starts including five from six at WP.

Another greyhound compiling an imposing Wentworth Park tally is the JODIE Lord-trained Midnight Spritz, who had to work hard from box eight before reaching the lead on the back straight and winning on Saturday in 29.68.

That success took Midnight Spritz's Wenty tally to six wins from 10 outings.

The biggest surprise on Saturday as far as times were concerned was the 29.71 recorded by the Sam Rees-trained Murrurundi Boy who led throughout to win a 520m Masters event.

Murrurundi Boy's best time in eight previous visits to Wentworth Park had been 30.12 but on Saturday he jumped in front from box one and wasn't headed, clocking early splits of 5.44 and a slick 13.79.

Fast times were the order of the night with National Derby winner History's Coming and the Bailey Dickinson-prepared Cawbourne Red both winning in 29.71.
