11 Wenty Wins For Coco Model

By Jeff Collerson
Coco Model, greyhound racing's "miss versatile", notched her 11th Wentworth Park 520m win on Friday night to accompany her pair of 280m victories at the track.

But owner-trainer Tayt Corless and his father Greg have declared she is only racing until she comes in season.

"And that is expected any day now,'' said Greg after Coco Model came from fourth early and second on the home bend to run down Federal Light in a slick 29.90 on Friday.

Coco Model boasts a personal best Wentworth Park 520m time of 29.73 and quickest 280m figures of a smart 16sec but the Corless family is anxious to breed from the rising four-year-old.

After Friday's win Tayt Corless said: "My choice for Coco Model's first mating is Tommy Shelby, the 2021 Golden Easter Egg winner, who pups are going well.

"But before then she may contest the heats of the Group 2 Ladbrokes Richmond Oaks on February 23.''

While Friday's Wentworth Park win took Coco Model's earnings to nearly $120,000 through 23 wins and 32 placings from 85 starts, it's not surprising her connections are optimistic about her future as a brood bitch.

She comes from an outstanding dam line, with her mother being the remarkable producer Champion Model.

Friday's Wentworth Park meeting signalled a happy homecoming for Tayt Corless, who was holidaying in the USA when Coco Model's 280m win on January 12 coincided with his father Greg suffering a near fatal heart attack.

"I was in New York with my fiance when I heard dad had a heart attack at Wenty and I desperately tried to get on a flight back to Australia immediately,'' Tayt recalled.

"But ice storms in New York prevented any flights being available but then dad recovered and when I proposed to my fiance she said 'yes' so that terribly stressful time had a happy ending for all concerned.''

Promising middle distance bitch Ritza Trish has been sold and will do her future racing under the care of trainer Patricia Chaker.

Ritza Trish was in the Mark Gatt kennel when she won her 520m maiden at Dapto on January 11 before finishing third, less than a length from the winner at her middle distance debut over 622m at Richmond.

Then last Wednesday she was runner-up, this time in a photo finish, over the same trip at the Londonderry circuit.

Rick Board, the 76-year-old brother of leading trainer Greg Board, seldom races at Wentworth Park these days but on Friday night landed a winning double with home grown litter brothers He's A Bridge and Autumn Cloud.

He's A Bridge, having his first start at Wentworth Park, led all the way to win the 520m maiden in 30.27 while Autumn Cloud, another Wenty newcomer, also led throughout in a 520m fifth grade in 30.31.

"They are by Spring Bridge, who won 19 races, mostly in Victoria, in 2018 and 2019, and a leading trainer who had him down there reckoned he had not put a lead on quicker dog,'' Board said.

"Spring Bridge is now the family pet of my niece but because he was so fast I put three bitches to him and He's A Bridge and Autumn Cloud are the first results.

"I got my first greyhound in 1972 but because I can no longer drive at night, a young local greyhound enthusiast, Jeremy McGrath, took them to Wentworth Park for me on Friday.

"I may have won a double at Wenty many years ago but I can't remember when so Friday's result was terrific.''
