Replays Pay Off For The Chakers

By Jeff Collerson
Bricklayer Bronson Chaker's pastime of watching video replays of greyhound races continued to pay off for his mother Patricia Chaker after Zeroed In notched her third win at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

It was through perusing video replays that Bronson advised Patricia to buy the white and fawn bitch after she had won two small races from five starts at Bendigo and Shepparton.

Zeroed In before her win on Saturday night.

"Apart from what Bronson considered was Zeroed In's potential, he also discovered she was closely related to Mepunga Blazer so could be a real asset as a brood bitch when her career on the track concluded,'' Patricia said.

Mepunga Blazer, now a successful stud dog, was an outstanding performer for Melbourne trainer Jeff Britton, winning 13 of just 25 starts and earning nearly $170,000.

On Saturday night at Wentworth Park Zeroed In led all the way to win a 520m fifth grade in 30.14, enhancing the former Victorian's love affair with Wenty.

Zeroed In has now had seven races at the Glebe circuit for three wins, three seconds and a third, while showing a particularly liking for being drawn in the centre or on the outside of the track.

Oscar Moses will head to Victoria this week for a trial at the Healesville straight track in preparation for the National Straight Track Championship there over 350m on Saturday, August 26.

"He pulled up well after winning last Saturday's NSW title at Richmond and later on I will target big track races with him,'' trainer Jason Magri said.

"Oscar Moses has bad wrists and while he can handle tighter tracks like Wentworth Park he tends to pull up sore after going around courses like that.''

Oscar Moses after winning the NSW National Straight Track Championship

There were plenty of hard luck stories from Saturday's NSW Straight Track Championship but none was unluckier than minor placegetter Rocky Reef.

The Brett May-trained former Victorian came from box eight and after checking hot favourite Shall Not (box seven) he proceeded to career across towards inside rail.

Rocky Reef did plenty of damage to his own prospects in the process and his performance to wind up just one-and-a-half lengths behind the winner, Oscar Moses, was outstanding.

Trainer Brett May said: "Rocky Reef flies around Maitland and as he is eligible for a fifth grade over 400m there I plan to race him there next Monday.

"The Maitland Gold Cup is not until December but that is a long range option because while it is over 450m, which is about as far as Rocky Reef wants to go, he is capable of leading them a merry dance in a race like that.

"Unfortunately Rocky Reef is purely a one turn track dog.

"He has had one third from three races at Gosford and The Gardens and I have trialled him on tight tracks but he just can't negotiate them.''
