Special Night At Wenty For Andrew

By Jeff Collerson
Andrew Rowe has held a trainer's licence for 35 years but enjoyed a special night to remember on Saturday when his "home grown" litter sister and brother Summer Key and Taw General presented him with his first winning double at Wentworth Park.

Summer Key, by Fernando Bale from Rowe's bitch Wayang Angel, led throughout to win her 520m fifth grade in 30.04 and 21 minutes later her brother Taw General ran down hot favourite Agland Luai to win a similar race in 29.88, his personal best Wentworth Park time.

Following his dual success Rowe said: "I'm 53 and started training at 18 but I was involved with dogs well before that because I virtually lived on Dapto dog track as a kid.

"Wayang Angel, the dam of my Wentworth Park winners tonight, won eight races and ran 17 placings and she has produced a couple of super keen chasers in Summer Key and Taw General.

"Summer Key really toughed it out to win tonight and showed a lot of determination to hold off Lochinvar Lona when that dog got the sit behind him.

"There is not much between my pair although Summer Key is probably slightly quicker, despite Taw General recording fastest time tonight.

"Taw General is very strong and when he turned for home a close second behind the pacemaker Agland Luai I was confident he would win, especially when I saw the leader get off the track on the corner.

"Taw General always charges home hard along the rails and he did that tonight.''

In Saturday's Wentworth Park Maiden Final Zipping Stefan continued the remarkable run of success by the John Finn-trained litter by Zipping Garth from Shoshe when he scored his first win after being placed in three from four starts.

Zipping Stefan railed to the lead leaving the back straight to win by just under a length in 30.33, with favourites It's Got Legs (third) and Where's Bonbon (unplaced) both dwelling at box rise.

John Finn had previously won four from five starts with Zipping Stefan's litter sister Zipping Lyris, two each with littermates Zipping Daria and Zipping Wilbur, and one with their sister Zipping Dione.

"Zipping Lyris has always been the fastest in the litter but Zipping Stefan is not too far behind her and his win tonight didn't surprise us because he has been clocking just over 30sec in 520m trials at Wentworth Park,'' Finn's wife Minnie said.

Good Odds Emma completed a massive 24 hours for Richmond trainer Frank Hurst when she notched her seventh Wentworth Park win in 13 appearances in Saturday's top grade 520m sprint.

Just 24 hours earlier Hurst had taken out the group 2 Ladbrokes Richmond Oaks in track record time with Good Odds Cash while Good Odds Emma's sizzling 29.61 effort on Saturday matched her previous best Wentworth Park figures posted a month ago.

Saturday night's top grade 720m event was expected to be a closely contested tussle but Super Estrella made a one act affair of the race when she led throughout to score by eight lengths.

Super Estrella nailed the start and easily overcame her box six draw to put the result beyond doubt at the first turn, covering the 720m in a sizzling 41.71, clearly her personal best figures.

The win lifted the David Smith-trained bitch's earnings to over $216,000.

Super Estrella, who set a track record for 722m at Nowra in December, had taken a tumble in a heat of The 715 at LADBROKES GARDENS on June 4 but showed she had suffered no blow to her confidence with Saturday night's tearaway win against top notch opposition.

Fire Legend, who led to the home turn when beaten a length into third place behind Angry Blizzard and Crazy Old Goat in the $100,000 to the winner Masters Meteor final at Wentworth Park on May 7, had his revenge on Saturday night.

In Saturday's Masters race Fire Legend jumped in front from box one - just as he had done early last month - but held on more strongly this time to defeat Angry Blizzard by just under a length in 30.13.

It was Fire Legend's 10th win in 16 appearances wearing the red rug, and took his tally after 105 races to 43 wins, 33 placings and nearly $226,000 for Grafton owner-trainer-breeder Mark Moroney.
