Family Double For Carl

By Jeff Collerson
Londonderry trainer Chris Carl landed a rare double on Wednesday when Simple Simon won at Richmond before his litter sister Let's All Chant scored just over two hours later at Wentworth Park.

Simple Simon, a brilliant front-runner, scored his eighth win from his past 10 appearances and clocked the fastest 320m figures yet posted on the re-built course, stopping the clock at 18sec.

Like Simple Simon, Let's All Chant led all the way to take out the opening event at Wentworth Park, a 520m maiden, in 30.27, after being runner-up in one of her only two previous starts, also at headquarters.

Carl bred his winning duo from his bitch Rhythm Section, who won eight races and is a half-sister to Justin King's 2021 Richmond Derby winner Incapacitated.

"They are from Rhythm Section's first litter by Moreira, and nine months ago she whelped her second litter, this time to Flying Ricciardo,'' Chris Carl said.

"Let's All Chant is nothing flash, before Wednesday night I thought she was around a 30.30 bitch at Wenty so was happy with how she went.

"Simple Simon is very fast but I'm not sure he will get 520 metres.

"I'm not saying he never will but at this stage it's doubtful because he gets himself so worked up before a race.

"He is as good as gold until I get him out of the kennels and begin leading him to the starting boxes.

"While Simple Simon does not bark or carry on like that I can see him churning at the prospect of racing and I believe that's why at this stage, short course racing is his go.''

Crack Melbourne trainer Jeff Britton won recent group race finals at Wentworth Park with Mepunga Ruby and Hank The Hustler but has nominated Mepunga Warrior as potentially his best chance in the June 4 heats of The 715 at LADBROKES GARDENS.

The inaugural 715 final, to be held on June 11, will be worth $500,000 to the winner, making it the world's richest long distance greyhound race.

Hank The Hustler won the Wentworth Park Gold Cup while Mepunga Ruby took out the Summer Distance Plate but Britton said: "I think the LADBROKES GARDENS track will suit Mepunga Ruby's litter brother Mepunga Warrior.

"He is not a true stayer but 715m at LADBROKES GARDENS looks easier than the 720m trip at Wentworth Park and Mepunga Warrior went to the line strongly winning over 520m in a quick 29.89 at Wenty last month.''

Meanwhile Tom Dailly has declared Gypsy WYONG, winner of four group one long distance races, will be the top contender for his all-conquering "team Dailly" kennel.

In Victoria Gypsy WYONG has taken out the Bold Trease, Topgun Stayers and The Zoom Top while she ran down Mepunga Ruby to win her fourth group one, the 720m Assocation Cup at Wentworth Park on April 9.

Trainer Andrea Dailly's husband Tom said: "We seldom trial our dogs before race night at Wentworth Park but we plan to make an exception with Gypsy WYONG for The 715.

"From what we've seen of LADBROKES GARDENS dogs need to have a look at the place before they race there.''
