The 2022 NSW National Straight Track Championship final was won by Extra Specialism in a boil over of epic proportions for Darren Sultana.

The son of Slingshot Whippa had only raced down the Richmond Straight twice before claiming the NSW title, and in doing so, eclipsed kennelmate and raging hot favourite Mr. America by 0.25 of a length.

The box draw seemingly playing a bit part in the result, with Extra Specialism enjoying an unincumbered run from Box 1, while Mr. America was held up for much of the race from Box 5. Once Mr. America finally extracted himself from the ruck, the kennelmate was off and gone.

Extra Specialism was a $31 hope heading into the race, while Mr. America was a $3.80 second elect after winning 13 times at the track in the lead up to the decider.

Mr. America went on to claim the National Straight Track Championship Final, also at Richmond, a week later, while Extra Specialism ran fourth.

Oscar Moses produced a similar upset result in 2023 after knocking off straight track superstar Shall Not in thrilling fashion at Richmond.

The Jason Magri-trained runner was the second elect for the final and produced a strong run from Box 2 to knock off the $1.30 hot pot, claiming a deserved win by 0.75 of a length in a time of 17.51.
