The Cannonball is one of the time-honoured features on the Richmond club's calendar.

It has been won by some speedy greyhounds over the years, and in 2020 it was dominated by trainer John Miles.

Miles trained each of the three heat winners of the event. His partner Susan Smith also qualified a runner for the final, so between them they had half the field.

Fittingly - and not surprisingly - Miles trained the winner and the runner-up, with siblings Laurie's Flyer and Blue Bronte filling the quinella.

In 2021, after a dazzling heat 22.41s performance, Jason Mackay's Straight Shift was a very short priced favourite for the Cannonball Final, but after being moderately away and checked soon after jumping, the favourite was out of play.

Peter Tobin's Hudson Bolt flew out of box 8 and once in front was never threatened.

In 2022 on a chilly night at Richmond, the Adam Wade-trained Lepidoptera brought up wi number 12 at start 32 with a brilliant all the way win in the Cannonball final.

The race was expected to be dominated by the Rob Tyler-trained Preston Lee who had run track record figures a week earlier in the heats, but after drawing box 8 he was never able to get across or get on the track from the wide draw.

The win was the second time Adam and his brother Paul Wade had won the prestigious Cannonball.

In 2023, it was the flying machine Speeding Fine who led from start to finish to claim the event.

The Johannes Vanderburg-trained speedster jumped perfectly from Box 3 to claim the lead from raging hot favourite and Ladbrokes Thunderbolt champion Vamoose, and he never looked back, claiming the race by 1.5 lengths.
