NSW National Distance Final

NSW State Finals' Night At Wenty

By Jeff Collerson
Zipping Kansas set a new track record when he won over 622m at Richmond on July 29 and has since broken the 520m record there in his final trial before Thursday night's 720m Ladbrokes NSW Distance Championship.

Zipping Kansas has drawn box three and while trainer Jason Magri said he "likes" the draw, he concedes Richmond is arguably his talented stayer's favourite track.

"He loves Richmond and on the old track Zipping Kansas won in 35.06 when Space Star's 618m record was 35.00 and he is equally at home on the roomy stretches of the new circuit there,'' Magri said.

Super Estrella is NSW's top stayer and at her first long distance test she won last year's version of this race, over 729m at Dapto, at her initial staying test.

Because the National titles were cancelled due to Covid, Super Estrella was robbed of her chance to take on Australia's best stayers in the grand final.

She maintains her outstanding form and after jumping cleanly from box four led all the way to beat Tiger Jack and Cawbourne Magic, two of her rivals on Thursday, in her personal best Wentworth Park 720m figures of 41.63 last Saturday night.

But Super Estrella's trainer David Smith said: "She has box seven at Wentworth Park on Thursday and I would have preferred to see her drawn closer to the rails.''

Although he was beaten on his merits by Super Estrella last week, Tiger Jack, who has clocked 41.70 at Wentworth Park, is the most suitably drawn runner on Thursday when he will exit box one.

Query dog is Pocket Money, who has won three of his past six starts at Brisbane's Albion Park but is trained at Grafton by Dave Irwin.

Pocket Money will have no trouble handling Wentworth Park and led all the way to beat Queensland's top stayer Days Of Thunder in fast time over 710m last Thursday night.

Pocket Money had box two in that race but galloped in the centre of the track so is not badly off in box five for his Sydney debut.

Simply Limelight is six months younger than his rivals and with 18 starts under his belt is far less experienced than his opponents but he looks the winner of Thursday night's Ladbrokes NSW Sprint Championship, 520m.

The Peter Rodgers-trained dog easily ran down noted strong finisher Ritza Donna to win his heat at Wentworth Park last Saturday, covering the 520m in 29.66, .28sec faster than Bandit Ned took to win the other heat.

Simply Limelight moves from box four to an ideal rails slot on Thursday and should only need to step away as well as he has done in his past five races to win comfortably.

Main danger looks to be Zipping Maserati in box two.

Zipping Maserati had box eight when fourth, beaten a length in Bandit Ned's heat, but will relish the shift closer to the rails on Thursday.

In nine races from boxes one and two the Jason Mackay-trained Zipping Maserati has scored six wins.

Best value on Thursday looms as Cumbria Jim, who has box four in the 520m Ladbroke It! Masters Stakes.

Cumbria Jim was runner-up to Crazy Old Goat in a tougher Masters event at Wentworth Park on July 16 and clocked a smart 20.69 in finishing second to the brilliant Ad Astra over 365m at Nowra on Monday.

Super Estrella's trainer David Smith is hopeful her second placing at Goulburn on August 5 will boost Cowgirl Ethics' confidence going into Thursday's seventh event, a 520m fourth and fifth grade.

"She took a tumble at her last Wentworth Park race on July 27 but I was pleased with her run at Goulburn and that should do her confidence the world of good,'' Smith said.

"Cowgirl Ethics has won four of her 13 starts at Wenty but has had no luck in several of her races there.''
