Not Bad On An Unsuited Track

He isn't suited by Wentworth Park but that didn't stop Mellcat Big Boy producing a fastest time of the night performance at headquarters on Saturday night.

Owned and trained by his breeder John Mellon, Mellcat Big Boy overcame a slow start to grab the lead leaving the catching pen before winning a 520m fifth grade by five lengths in 29.72.

Mellcat Big Boy, who has a great record on roomy tracks like Goulburn and Bulli, had been unplaced in two previous Wentworth Park outings.

But he made full use of his wide draw to sweep around the leaders after his tardy getaway and won running away.

"Tracks like Wentworth Park aren't his go,'' John Mellon said after the race.

"He would be better off if the run to the first turn from the starting boxes was twice as long because Mellcat Big Boy is really a big track dog.

"But since he won in 26.05 at Bulli in April he has run two slashing trials at Wenty, clocking 29.86 and then coming back a week ago and clocking 29.70.

"Those trials were on his own of course but he was perfectly drawn in box eight tonight and with only five rivals, I told friends if he doesn't win at Wenty tonight he will never win one there.''

Mellcat Big Boy's run home time on Saturday night was an outstanding 11.65.

After five second placings from five starts, Ibrox Wildfire finally broke through for a well deserved win in the opening race, another 520m fifth grade, recording 29.93.

In each of her previous Wentworth Park outings Ibrox Wildfire has ruined her winning prospects by veering off the track at the first turn but on Saturday, from box one, she jumped in front and wasn't headed.

"She didn't duck off on the first corner as badly tonight as she has in her past few starts at Wentworth Park,'' trainer Billy Dance said later.

"I trialled Ibrox Wildfire after the last race at WP recently and she handled the first turn okay when she clocked 29.80, but of course that was in a solo hit-out.

"Although she won tonight I don't think she has made Wentworth Park her favourite track just yet.''

Trainer Ron Asquith believes Garden Party will develop into a handy middle or long distance performer but is in no hurry to step her up following her slick 29.96 520m fifth grade win at Wentworth Park on Saturday.

Garden Party trailed pacemaker Skedaddle Jamie to the home bend but finished best along the rails to win going away by a length.

After the race, Ron Asquith said: "I'm pretty sure Garden Party will get over a bit of ground later on and I intend stepping her up in distance fairly soon.

"But after she went so well tonight I think I will try and pick up a couple more low grade sprint races with her.''

Good Odds Emma (pictured) looked the bet of the night on Saturday but the Frank Hurst-trained bitch gave favourite backers plenty of anxiety before she roared home to win the 520m Ladbrokes Switch Final for bitch in 30.09.

Good Odds Emma went into the race as fastest qualifier after posting 29.85 in her May 11 heat win but while she led throughout that night she had to come from behind to take out Saturday's final.

After being a distant fourth on the back straight, Good Odds Emma charged into third place on the home turn before running down the Ron Asquith-trained Scramjet to win by a length in 30.09.

Magic Flame maintained her remarkable Wentworth Park consistency with an all-the-way 520m fifth grade win in 29.96, her personal best time at the track.

The Michael Ivers-trained began cleanly and railed superbly from box two to take her Wenty record to five wins, six seconds and two thirds from 15 starts.

TAB Million Dollar Chase champion She’s A Pearl was expected to win her 13th race in succession at Wentworth Park on Saturday, but she didn’t make it to the boxes.

She’s A Pearl was found to have come on season on the trip from her home at Gunning to Wentworth Park, and stewards declared her a late scratching.

In her absence the Free-For-All went to Ruth King’s Asiram in 30.04s.
