No Rush For French Martini

By Jeff Collerson
She doesn't turn two until May 27 but French Martini became the third fastest winner of the time-honoured Ladies Bracelet when she overcame box five for an all-the-way on Saturday night at Wentworth Park.

The Bracelet became an age restricted race for the first time this year, which made French Martini's achievement even greater.

This classic for bitches got off to an impressive start when Shapely Escort, one of the greatest female sprinters of the past five decades, won the inaugural final at Harold Park in 1971.

Wentworth Park became the venue in 1988 with the John Finn-trained Jessica Casey setting the race record of 30.17 on a grass surface while Amy's Doll won the initial Wentworth Park final run on sand in 1993.

Lucy Lawless, trained by Christine and Alan Proctor, established a sand surface race record of 30.16 in 1998 with those figures lowered on three occasions before Jason MACKAY's Zipping Willow clocked a flying 29.44 in 2014.

MACKAY's Zipping Lilly, dam of his outstanding Million Dollar Chase Consolation winner Zipping Maserati on Saturday night, scored in 2016 while Golden Easter Egg winner Zipping Bailey, another MACKAY-trained bitch, was successul in 2019.

Pay Call, prepared by French Martini's trainer Peter Lagogiane, equalled Zipping Willow's 29.44 race record in 2021 with French Martini becoming the third fastest Bracelet winner of all time with her 29.46 effort last Saturday.

"I am meeting with her owner Adam Brandt this week to discuss French Martini's immediate future,'' Lagogiane said.

"We won't be rushing her because she has done all that has been asked of her for such a young, inexperienced bitch.

"It's gratifying to see a greyhound we put massive wraps on before she ever raced fulfil our expectations.

"When John Martin broke her in at Casino he told us French Martini was going to be something very special as well as being a good beginner.

"Quite often dogs which break in well don't go on as well as expected but French Martini has been a star from day one.''

Last year's winner Jungle Deuce is not yet ready to Chase back-to-back finals but Saturday night's Heats of the $50,000 to the winner Ladbrokes Brother Fox at Dubbo mark the return to racing of Zipping Kyrgios and National Derby winner Slingshot Hooks in Heat one while Million Dollar Chase finalists Good Odds Cash and Irinka Riley step out in Heats three and four.

Those appearances alone make this year's race, formerly known as the Dubbo Gold Cup, an exciting affair with first and second across the line in four Heats qualifying for the final on Saturday, May 21.

Zipping Kyrgios, last year's fastest Heat winner, has drawn awkwardly in box eight for his comeback race in Heat one where the Jason MACKAY-trained Fantastic Raven, minor placegetter in the group 1 Ladbrokes Golden Easter Egg on April 9, is ideally boxed in one.

Heat two is arguably the weakest of the four qualifying races with MACKAY's Zipping Lopez in box three, Ashley Dwyer's prolific Wentworth Park winner Special Blend in seven and The Phoenix finalist Billy Creek in box six.

Good Odds Cash, who Chased home She's A Pearl in the Golden Easter Egg and was a finalist in that bitch's Million Dollar Chase romp, has box six in Heat three while Million Dollar Chase Consolation winner Zipping Maserati is nicely placed in box eight in Heat four.

Zipping Maserati will clash with last year's Brother Fox runner-up and MDC finalist Irinka Riley (box five) while the much-travelled Chase Me Honey, who is a Dubbo winner and has won 17 of 49 starts, has drawn box two.
