Maserati On The Road To Dubbo

By Jeff Collerson
Zipping Maserati is off to Dubbo for Saturday night's heats of The Brother Fox (formerly the Dubbo Gold Cup) following his runaway win in Saturday's Million Dollar Chase Consolation at Wentworth Park.

The Jason MACKAY-trained son of Zipping Garth led throughout to beat Fernando Hunter by more than six lengths in 29.57, figures bettered only by "the machine" She's A Pearl, who covered the 520m in the Million Dollar Chase in a race record 29.32.

"Zipping Maserati promised so much as a youngster but until Saturday night he had not quite lived up to my high expectations of him,'' Jason MACKAY said.

"So I was relieved to see him go so fast at Wenty as I had been hoping he would finally put it all together and he certainly did that.

"He will have a trial at Dubbo before The Brother Fox heats on Saturday.''

MACKAY did not have a starter in the Million Dollar Chase but landed a winning double on Saturday at Wentworth Park, with Zipping Maserati's litter brother Zipping Lopez taking out the final event in 29.75, clearly his personal best Wenty figures.

Zipping Lopez is not quite as good as his brother but has now won 15 from 29 appearances, with Zipping Maserati's tally standing at 14 wins from 27 outings, so each has a better than 50 per cent winning record.

Final of The Brother Fox, worth $50,000 to the winner, will be run on Saturday, May 21.

Missing from The Brother Fox will be track record holder Jungle Deuce, who is on the way back after sustaining a hock injury.

Jungle Deuce's injury could not have come at a worse time as the Jack Smith-trained champion also missed a chance at qualifying for the TAB Million Dollar Chase.

"He is starting to trial again but there's no way Jungle Deuce would be ready in time for the Brother Fox,'' Jack Smith said.

"But his kennelmate Irinka Riley, who finished fourth in Saturday night's Million Dollar Chase, is a definite starter in Saturday's heats.''

Irinka Riley is a pretty handy "second string" as he clocked a flying 29.29 when he Chased Jungle Deuce home in that dog's record smashing 28.93 Dubbo 516m win on December 23.

His run to beat all but the placegetters, after missing the start from his poor box six draw in the MDC, was outstanding.

Mr America could well be described as the She's A Pearl of straight track racing after the Darren Sultana-trained speedster notched his 10th win in 11 appearances over 324m at Richmond on Saturday.

Mr America, who won nine races in Victoria before coming to Sultana's Londonderry kennels this year, is raced by George Kairouz and Terry Hill, the former international rugby league star and massive greyhound racing enthusiast.

"This dog's problem is that he crashes towards the fence, where the lure is, no matter where he draws,'' Darren Sultana said.

"Apparently he used to do the same thing in Victoria, even on roomy one turn circle tracks like Ballarat and Shepparton.

"I plan to try him at one of our big tracks like Bulli or Maitland eventually but for now I'll keep racing him up the straight at Richmond.''
