Relief For Judy As Sunburnt Equals Bessy

By Jeff Collerson
When Sunburnt Highway joined Bessy Boo as Wentworth Park's most prolific winner on Saturday night nobody was more relieved than trainer Judith Richardson.

After Sunburnt Highway ran down Ritza Coen to notch his 34th WP win at start number 100, Richardson exclaimed: "Thank heavens that's over!

"This week has been stressful because I've been so worried about this race, there was so much pressure on with Billy (Sunburnt Highway) trying to equal Bessy Boo's record.

"When he came up with box eight I was really concerned because Billy had won only four from 23 races out of that box.

"But my husband John gave me a lot of hope when he did the form and declared the other dogs in the race were all railers so were likely to give Billy a clear run down the outside without getting taken out on the first turn.

"If Sunburnt Highway breaks the record and wins again we will be tempted to retire him but because he loves going to the track we think he might wreck his kennel if he is left at home when we go racing.

"When we get home tonight Sunburnt Highway will be tearing around the paddock as if he has not been in a race.''

Sunburnt Highway was again by far the oldest dog in Saturday's Masters race and although he turns six in August, Judith Richardson quipped: "Nobody has told him how old he is.

"Fortunately he has been injury free all his life but the first time he pulls up sore or with any problem he will be retired.''

Sunburnt Highway's remarkable win on Saturday took his earnings to $326,475 with his 520m time of 30.16 quicker than the 30.23 and 30.26 he had posted in his two previous WP wins.

Coast Model confirmed her credentials for Saturday night's heats of the group 1 Paws Of Thunder with another scorching best time of the night performance, leading all the way in the Free-For-All in 29.58 for the 520m.

Just a week earlier the JODIE Lord-trained Coast Model had led throughout to win a similar race in 29.60.

The group 2 Summer Distance Plate had been regarded as almost a presentation for Stanley Road until Cool Bourbski and Victoria's Untapped lowered the local champ's colours in Saturday's top grade 720m event.

Stanley Road finished strongly for third but wound up just over three lengths behind Cool Bourbski, a relatively new addition to crack trainer Jason MACKAY's kennels.

Cool Bourbski, who had broken Big Butters' LADBROKES GARDENS 715m record last month, led throughout in a fast 42.01, with Untapped a strong finishing and luckless second.

After the race MACKAY's daughter April, who handled Cool Bourbski on her father's behalf, said: "Being out in front all the way will do that greyhound's confidence the world of good.

"Cool Bourbski is a confidence bitch so that was the perfect hit-out for next Saturday's Summer Distance Plate heats.''

Trainer Dustin Drew was delighted with Untapped's performance, as that greyhound was checked at the first turn and got onto the winner's heels on the back straight.

"Untapped had never seen WP before tonight and she always improves with a run or two on a track,'' Drew said.

Margie Irene won Saturday's opening event in 29.88 for trainer Peter Stanford while her litter brother Asiram scored for Ruth King in 29.84 four races later.

Margie Irene, who was originally trained by King, returned to her Kembla Grange kennels after Saturday's race.

King explained: "At my place Margie Irene had got into the habit of playing up in the starting boxes so I sent her to Peter Stanford to give her some box practice.

"Peter has worked wonders with Margie Irene and the plan was always that she was going to return to my kennels.

"Although Asiram went a tick faster tonight, Margie Irene has always been about a length quicker than her brother.''
