Hyperventilate Grabs Ricci's Record

By Jeff Collerson
Darrin Croser was left wondering "what might have been" after his wife Jo-Ann's greyhound Hyperventilate broke the Bulli 340m record on Tuesday.

Flying Ricciardo established the 18.91 time standard at his first start in May last year but on Tuesday Hyperventilate recorded 18.90 after taking an early lead and winning easily for his ninth success in 26 appearances.

Spare a thought for the connections of Hammer Down, who had clocked 18.91 in winning the opening event, only to see their record short-lived when Hyperventilate posted .01sec faster in race 11.

"Hyperventilate's litter brother, Mr Hyperactive, was a lot quicker and was going to become a super star until he broke his hock and had to be retired,'' Croser said.

"As a youngster he was trialling 19sec flat at Bulli when Hyperventilate could only run 19.30.

"Mr Hyperactive won six of his first seven races and then his career came to an abrupt halt.

"Because as a young dog he was trialling 18.30 over 330m and 22.31 over 400m at Richmond, I intend obtaining a couple of brood bitches and using him as a stud dog or giving away some straws to interested breeders.

"I am not getting carried away with Hyperventilate's record run because let's face it, the track was on fire on Tuesday.

"One can only imagine what sort of time Flying Ricciardo would have clocked last Tuesday.

"And while Jo-Ann and I are proud to see Hyperventilate run the record, we don't expect him to retain it for too long.

"Those figures are within the range of a lot of very fast dogs that are around at the moment.''

Terry Hong paid tribute to his daughter Tamara after he landed a winning double at Maitland on Monday with Let's Go Hornets and Metro Mike.

Let's Go Hornets won over 400m in 22.52 while Metro Mike led throughout in a slick 22.30.

"I work full time so rely on my daughter Tamara to look after my greyhounds in the afternoons while I take the dogs' morning shift,'' Hong said.

"My only previous winning double was at Taree seven or eight years ago so it was a bit of a thrill to win two races at Maitland's TAB meeting.

"Let's Go Hornets won because she jumped well and was able to lead, as while she has ability, she has no track sense and if she has to come from behind she tends to run into the back of the dogs ahead of her.

"Metro Mike though is extremely talented but he only gets away cleanly about once in every six starts.

"If he always jumped as well as he did last Monday he would have a far better strike rate than the six wins and 10 placings he has so far had in his 32 races.

"Metro Mike is capable of getting further than the 400m at Maitland and has won in 29.71 over 515m at Gosford.

"His next start will be in race seven over 515m at LADBROKES GARDENS on Friday, and while he has had no luck at that track so far I expect him to run well.''
