Cooke Looking For Cash In Lismore Cup Heats

By Jeff Collerson
There isn't a faster dog in tomorrow night's Lismore Workers Club Cup heats than Cash View but the greyhound's box manners can bring him unstuck.

Cash View, who has box two in heat three of the 520m event, has had nine wins and seven seconds from 25 starts, with slow getaways detracting from his still impressive record.

"If I trial him one-out just about anywhere he will break the track record,'' owner-trainer Robert Cooke said.

"He is one fast dog and early in his career he was a good beginner.

"But for some reason he has got into the habit of scratching at the boxes when he hears the lure approaching.

"If I could use ear plugs on him I'm pretty sure that would fix his problem but they are not permitted.

"Cash View loses several lengths nearly every time he comes out of the boxes and I've tried everything I can think of to remedy that but to no avail.

"He has drawn near the rails in his Cup heat which isn't good because he is a better greyhound from a wide draw.

"So I'm hoping he can run first or second and qualify for the final because then, if he drew an outside alley, he would be hard to beat, irrespective of how he jumped.''

Box seven is fine for Mia Magic in heat four but trainer Mitch Northfield said: "I only wish she had not drawn the toughest heat.

"She is well positioned in box seven but is tackling powerful opposition, especially with Fire Legend in box one.

"Mia Magic was unplaced at her only Lismore start but there is no reason why she won't handle the track well.''

Northfield has Mia Magic's older half-sister Kooringa Lucy in box seven in heat three, and she handles wide draw capably.

Kooringa Lucy has won five of her 16 races from boxes seven and eight and recorded her best Lismore 520m time of 30.03 when she wore the black rug in February last year.

Fire Legend, who will wear the red rug in heat four, defeated Best Fit in last year's final.

Trainer Mark Moroney said: "He was airborne for the 2020 Cup but even though he turns four in April he is not too far off where he was last year.

"Fire Legend has just won The MACCA at LADBROKES GARDENS in a nippy 29.71 and although that time was a lot slower than the 29.28 Zipping Kyrgios clocked winning the Black Top, at his age I wouldn't expect my dog to get anywhere near that greyhound.

"Last year Fire Legend had a horror run with box draws and drew five in both his Lismore Cup heat and final, but he has box one in this year's heats and that is a big bonus.''

Queenslander Flying Jet is chasing a winning hat-trick in heat one of the Cup but caretaker trainer Terry Jordan is unsure how strongly the dog will run out the 520m trip.

"Flying Jet was sent to my place a week ago because his Queensland connections could not bring him to NSW without going into quarantine when they returned home,'' Jordan said.

"I don't know a lot about Flying Jet but his form suggests that while he is a very smart 450m dog the 520m might trouble him.

"Flying Jet has plenty of early speed so has a good chance of leading from box two but the last little bit could find him out.''
